As about the murder rate in Russia, so the situation is very simple. Russia has the Northern Caucasus region where we have a permanent anti-terror war against radical Islamists. It's a real war which makes most of the Russian statistics on murder. For example, if you compare the yearly murder rate in Moscow city (11,5 million citizens) and in NYC (8.5 million citizens), you will note that NYC has more murders than Moscow with its much larger population. So why the average US murder rate is lesser than a Russian one? That's because Northern Caucasus is a part of Russia, and it adds a lot to the summary murder rate of the whole country.
