This brings back memories... every movie released in the UK had to be reviewed by a film board (this is in the 70's and early 80's), and porn (of course) would not allowed to be shown--but there was a loophole: if you belonged to a cinema club that showed films there was no restriction on what they could show--so you had to join one of these cine clubs to watch porn. I belonged to one in Brighton, when I lived there, and they often showed these Color Climax movies, which I really liked as the models were usually real girl-next-door types which is what floats my boat.

In the early 90s, there was no online porn and the level which could be legally sold was controlled in a very clever way. Once the government realised getting a conviction for selling porn was a lot harder than they wished. The accused showed the video, read the terms the law deemed would make it illegal.

New faces.
 

Pre-Internet porn distribution was limited by shelf space or delivery van space. Allowing top publishers to achieve very high circulation figures that are impossible for online porn paysites. If it was a man phoning for his wife or girlfriend, I asked to speak to her, again most were phoning while she was out. These were given a repeat of the ad. Girls were given a friendlier response. The work is for UK/US magazines and videos, it's open leg, minimum and they get paid on the day. If they turn up for the interview with 2 pieces of ID they may get work on the day. I was able to shoot any girl for ?Readers Wives? magazines or sections. These were worth a minimum of £100 and as much as £400. When a stunner turned up I could shoot on the day, no makeup or preparation and make $3,000 plus from a set.

The key to finding those suitable was the casting interview. Greet them nicely, treat them like ladies, tell them everything about the job and be able to convince them that I was the real deal. Front Covers proving I had shot the set in my studio and was credited with the work helped. Also, when telling the girls about the work I qualified what they wanted to do and were willing to do it. This is essential. Watching the eyes, body language and listening to the tone of replies. It's easier for a girl to say what she will do than actually do it.

I would ask. ?Have you ever done that, will you do that now, show me, etc.? I never shot a girl doing something she wouldn't do in her private life. OK, I introduced a few girls to new experiences they enjoy now. Lesbian sex being the most popular. This is easily qualified by offering the girl the chance to do it now with a female assistant. Rarely did they say no. LOL

After the interview, I asked the girl if she had any questions, which I answered. Then I gave her a form to fill out. The best times during the 90s were the trips we took to Sunnier climates. They were breaks paid for by doing a little bit of work. The budgeting was simple.

The danger of these trips was the unpredictability of the weather.

Back in the day marketing was simple and crude. Pay for an advert, people buy samples from the advert, make a profit on the samples to more than pay for the advert and then get the sample buyers to rebuy at a rate of 70% (7-10).

Advertising spend varied from $800 to $1600 a month. They would bring in 200 to 500 sample sales a month. Samples were $8 a piece. They cost $2 to duplicate, package and post. It was a small profit, a profit none the less.

The content was King, if it was bad, no one bought, if it were good sales were great.

The crunch was those sample tapes. To market something one has to have a product with attributes that stand out from the pack. Just pointing out this is another loaf of bread as amazing, tasty, filling, healthy, attractive, easy to find as every other loaf of bread and hoping passing traffic will pick yours and then concentrating on finding as much passing traffic as possible. Isn't, IMO, marketing.

If I had of opened a paysite in the UK I would have expanded on what I was doing already.
