According to the New Ballance website
"we're proud to be the only major company to make or assemble more than 4 million pairs of athletic footwear per year in the USA, which represents a limited portion of our US sales. Where the domestic value is at least 70%, we label our shoes Made in the USA.

Our commitment to domestic manufacturing allows New Balance to employ American workers at our five facilities in Maine and Massachusetts. Whenever possible, we purchase materials from domestic suppliers who employ more than 7,000 workers locally."

If we force them to pay $4 a day they close down and move the factory somewhere else where they can pay less and now those workers are making $0 a day. However, many companies do this no matter why wages go up. For example, there are situations involving Nike where workers at one of their factories wanted to unionize so they shut the factory down. In short, when we get to that "ratchet up" part he talks about and wages do increase, the companies move to the next country where they can pay less.

I'm not bashing capitalism, I'm just saying to argue that sweatshops are a good thing gives me a queasy feeling. The main reason companies hire sweatshops is because they are cheap, once they stop being so, the companies move on. Maybe some people are helped out and do have better lives, but many end up just being exploited.

You can make the same argument for globalisation.

It always amuses me when the dullards witter about "Globalisation" being some great evil. "Soros and the evil globalists".

The undeniable truth is that globalisation brought billions of Asians out of poverty and malnutrition. In return the West enjoys a fabulous standard of living.

Asia was as poor as Africa 50 years ago. Now capitalism and globalisation has created tiger economies.

Churchill said that Democracy is the least worst political system, Capitalism and globalisation is the least worst of the socio-economic systems. It is not perfect, but it is the best of available options. Bashing it is silly, working to improve it and iron out the imperfections is the only sensible option.

"A new report from Edison Trends says Nike’s online sales grew 31% from Sunday through Tuesday of Labor Day weekend this year. That’s notably better than last year’s 17% seasonal increase."

So that says the sales increase happened from Sept. 2nd to Sept. 4th.

BUT...the Kapernick deal wasn't ANNOUNCED until Tuesday Sept. 4th.

"make or ASSEMBLE" where assemble is the key word...next sentence they fess up it represents a LIMITED portion of their US sales...translation: not a lot...

AND OF THOSE USA MADE SHOES, 30% of the material is not USA made...

But that was dated August 20th. Not sure if that has any relevance to what happened since.

Here is the most recent report...and yes it looks like it's a big homerun for Nike:

Nike knows what it's doing. The media played into its hands. Well played.

Capitalism is a beautiful thing. I'm not being ironic. Seriously. SJWs moist themselves crying about people earning $2 per day but that $2 is way more than .10 USD per day doing family farm field work.

Kapaernick did not make the sales "surge", it was Labor day sales prices.
Nike stock was kicking ass before Kapernick ads ran. If Nike had Maria Sharapova do ads it would be at the same place.

On a side note, I was talking to sportswear shop sales person in Hong Kong, They said Nike sales have stopped and Adidas sales took off because of the Serena Williams US Open temper tantrum and loss to Naomi Osaka. Serena Williams disgraced the game and America.

Winners wear Adidas:winkwink:

I'm a social democrat who believes in capitalism. just not in it's current form. that's the frustrating thing, unless you live like ted kaczynski we all participate in injustice via our interactions with society, and don't currently have a choice to not participate in shit we know is wrong.

my shoes are my vegan purple docs and flip flops, both made in Asia. Do you think these workers are paid well?

China is becoming a massive investor in JA and def helping the country get out from under the thumb of the US, but for people in China who still have suicide nets around computer factories?

or women in Bangladesh who still die in fires in sweatshops?

or racialized/low income kids in North America who are kicked out of school for some of the most minor offenses (man, like some kids are expelled for way less shit than I did back in my day). so they either sell drugs or be squeegee kids cuz they have zero support from anyone in authority who could help them?

and we all seem to be ok with this. otherwise we COULD change capitalism which has gone through several stages already.

capitalism is a human construct, we could change it if we wanted to, to be more just and ethical. but we don't.

why?
