I have to agree with you, actually was thinking about that today while listening. My thoughts were "who else would I really sit and listen to for hours a day and still be entertained??" It makes working sooooooooo much better.

He's rich as fuck and he has an incredibly cushy job with no risk.
Case Closed.

i think there is a big similarity here..
i consider Howard Stern quality entertainment, something i would pay for..but when it came time to install the damn thing in my car and subscribe, i too lost interest in Howard.
I would listen to his show in a heartbeat if he was on my dial..
fucking US big brother ruined it.. no free speech in this country any longer.

Exactly. That's my point exactly.

bloggingseo 10-14-2008 07:16 PM

Howard Stern will never die, sorry!

Bojangles 10-14-2008 07:21 PM

I miss Howard. :(

Drake 10-14-2008 07:21 PM

Who would pay to listen to such trash every day. It'd be like paying to read the non-business threads on GFY.

I kinda hate Howard Stern so be it ...

RP Fade 10-14-2008 07:49 PM

I listened to him for about 1 week...

mmcfadden 10-14-2008 07:51 PM

The LATimes also closed with this...

"Since Stern's departure from terrestrial radio, rumors have periodically circulated that the shock jock will return to his terrestrial radio roots. Stern has dismissed the talk, but his current contract expires in 2010. What then? What if he returned to FM?

"Stations would be lining up to get him," said Harrison. "He grabbed the brass ring and is now on sabbatical from a lot of stuff that had nothing to do with his life. But if he ever wanted to return, there'd be nothing but open arms."

That doesn't sound like dead man walking

Two years later they had around 8 million and they bought XM who has around 9 million subscribers. The combined companies give them around 17 million subscribers. The only subscription based company in the US with more subscribers is Comcast.

They say he has around 5-9 million listeners a day. There are no ratings for sattelite, but most of the people that joined after he started joined for him and they have ways of estimating how many listeners they have. When all the hardware is switched over and the XM people can listen to him that number could double.

if you figure 8 million listeners @ $12 a month that is around 96 million a month in revenue not counting the 9 million subscribers from XM. Mel Karmizan the CEO of Sirius has said that they have already recouped their investment in Howard. He may not have as many A list celebs on his show, but if you listed daily before he only had 1-2 big name people a month on his old show and he seems to have around the same now.

To me the show now is better than it has been in years. Since it is uncensored it is funnier and I still like most of the guests they have. Personally I would rather have them have some Whack Packer or some C or D list celeb that is going to be an honest, good guest than some A lister who is going to recite the same bullshit they tell everyone else that interviews them.

Howard is far from dead.

Good points, all of them. More people listen to him every day still, than tune in and watch Letterman.

By the way, the list of celeb's he get's now is different because he's uncensored, and they don't have to worry about him being limited in an interview by FCC reg's.

Semi-Retired-Dave 10-14-2008 10:20 PM

I used to like him, we used to run our AgeCheck ads back in the days on his radio station prime time. We even sponsored him to do a live show at the PlayBoy mansion.

But I agree, he got tired of listening to after a while. Same shit day after day.

wasn't it rumored that Stern paid the Iron Sheik like $10,000 to appear on his tv show once?

slavdogg 10-14-2008 11:26 PM

he got 500m over 10 years

if you say he has 2 million listeners
do the math 2m * $15/month * 12 = $350m a year

d-null 10-14-2008 11:29 PM

very classic stuff, look at how Iron Sheik is really disturbed deep down by these imposters, it looks like he might have a heart attack from the stress they are putting him through :1orglaugh

Comparing free radio listeners to millions of paid subscribers is like comparing cheap tube traffic to members area traffic.

Howard went from George Clooney, Johnny Depp, Kiera Knightly, Julia Roberts, Madonna, etc to having the likes of Hulk Hogan and Kathy Griffin (who?) on his show now... What an idiot... No one cares about that loser anymore...

Sure he has money... But he can't get into the posh clubs to spend it because he is a loser like Tara Reed.

Rest In Peace, Howard. Your celebrity has died!

Jealous much? 2 million listeners is about 2 million more than YOU have. And no Sirius isn't fucked. In case you haven't heard they are merging with XM. Anyways I'm not even a fan of his, but you are just beng a retard. By the way as far as 20 milion listeners, well who in the fuck listens to regular radio anymore anyways?

BeHeadR 10-15-2008 01:36 AM

Why does it seems as though the vast majority of people bashing Howard don't even listen to him?

Howard has exceeded all expectations since he joined Sirius, he had multiple incentive bonus' in his contract which stipulated he had to increase listenership by "x" each quarter - to my knowledge the actual numbers aren't public but the fact remains he hit them.

He has the highest listenership on satellite radio by a long shot and the potential number of people who are able to listen to howard just expanded by a great deal thanks for the Sirius/XM Merger.

Regarding the content of the show:
I personally like it much more today than ~10 years ago, not just because it's uncensored but because it covers a much larger number of subjects. Before it was just all about Howard talking about how the "man" is keeping him down, or about his obsession with Pam Anderson (insert name of porn star) or something along those lines.

I love all the additions to the show except for Howard News which is just tacky and overkill. Artie, Richard, Sal, Ronnie, JD, and the rest of the staff do some great bits and get limited to the right amount of time so they don't get old....same with the wack pack.

I think this is just a case of people doing what they typically do, idealizing something from the past and criticizing the current incarnation of it since everything from 'back in the day" is always soooooo superior :winkwink:

I think you and some other peeps on GFY are real life heros. Sticking up for the common good of mankind and those who can no longer protect themselves from bashing. Like Howard Stern.

Well it's kind of hard to legitimately criticize something when most haven't heard him since the move to satellite....except maybe a clip here and there.

V_RocKs 10-15-2008 02:47 AM

Rays all the way baby!

ClickYou 10-15-2008 05:36 AM

Howard Stern is an American Hero. He has repeatedly risked everything he has to fight for first amendment rights. He has won big and he has lost big. But he's still doing his thing and that's impressive. I hope you can all stand up as well as he did when the FCC or whatever agency is going to regulate your obscenity show up.

Jarmusch 10-15-2008 06:04 AM

The tubes killed his traffic.

pornguy 10-15-2008 06:18 AM

The problem with satellite radio is it's ahead of its time. Give it a few more years, and it will be doing better...

Honestly, how much time do YOU spend in the car and listening to the radio. Me, anyplace I go it takes less then 15 min to get there. No reason to pay for satellite radio.

Do they have a receiver for the home yet?

Are you kidding? Of course they have a receiver for the home and even ones with a recording capability in case you don't get up early in the morning. Members can also listen to the live audio stream online and the rebroadcasts later in the day. If you are a fan, the Howard Stern radio show and associated shows on his channels are ideal entertainment for webmasters who work on their computer all day to pass the time. I listen to the show every day beginning to end because I am a big fan.

amacontent 10-15-2008 10:09 AM

As much of a jerk as he can be, doesnt he stand for freedom of speech, which we seem to fight for every day

germ 10-15-2008 10:20 AM

I'd gladly let some random guy on an internet forum call me a loser to have his bank accounts and hot ass wife.

V_RocKs 10-15-2008 02:06 PM

People said that about cableT.V. back in the day. I've had satellite radio for about 2 years now and think i've literally turned my terrestrial radio on maybe once or twice.

Kudles 10-28-2008 12:48 PM

I used to love his show

Andrew138 10-29-2008 11:10 AM

He was in one of the best movies of all time "Private Parts". His "Cash For Gold" jingle is the best song ever. The man is a legend.

Probably, but I wouldn't take it as a given. Unless you live in NY, LA or a major college town, regular radio is a cesspool of advertising, exactly the same shit from coast to coast, even the same automated DJ's. I don't know ANYONE who listens to the radio. Even in Vegas it's just watered down bullshit. Like listening to a 24 hr Bounty dishtowel commercial.

MrPotatoBread 10-29-2008 12:47 PM

I was a fan long ago. Don't listen to him anymore but that doesn't mean that he still isn't the shit for what he has done in the past.

I don't understand these fair weather fans! My love for Howard hasn't diminished over the years. I still listen every day. Maybe some people's tastes changed or they just don't have time to listen anymore due to having more business responsibilities and families.

d-null 10-29-2008 01:15 PM

on Sirius I listen to Jason Ellis and Bam Margera more than I listen to Stern

(on Faction)

cgu 10-29-2008 01:24 PM

Howard is the man. I listen daily and listen to Bubba. Howard has plenty of A listers. You're just preaching a dead horse. The show is better than its ever been and Sirius made their $ back instantly in subscriptions. The economy, new car sales, etc have clobbered the industry, but I will NEVER not own Satellite Radio. You CAN NOT GO BACK. Even my girlfriend who is an ipod nutcase steals my Sirius constantly to listen for new bands, she hits the memo button and then goes and itunes them. Try it out, listen to Howard and then speak.
