Seriously. The show ruined Hawaii for me as a destination...

That was filmed on Oahu in Honolulu which is like a tropical San Francisco. Not the best place to vacation and escape the rat race, drugs, and thieves. The north shore is the place to be on Oahu. Otherwise go directly to Maui or Kauai for a vacation in paradise.

I lived on Maui and dated a guy from Alaska. Alaska sounds nice but I would never live there.

I would have to visit them before deciding. I have always been more interested in visiting Alaska than Hawaii but for long term living it would probably have to be Hawaii.

If you have money, both.

Alaska would be the home base. Alaska has low taxes, and even gives money back to citizens. Hawaii is very expensive and highly unionized.

This is pretty much bullshit - as someone who has lived on several of the Hawaiian Islands for years at a time I can assure you - there is no crime problem. Unless you park a rental car full of cameras in a bad part of Oahu - also there are great and amazing people in Hawaii as well as some bad apples, like any state.
