Apparently Joe Francis is a little miffed at Nick Denton of Gawker, so I had to learn more about Mr. Denton...

I was wondering before if Denton had the $$$ to take on the Douche of the Decade (given the threats that Joe was lobbing at Nick), and it appears that Denton can put plenty of money into a legal war chest to take on Francis, should the need arise.

Personally, I think that Joe Francis has bigger issues to deal with (such as the IRS and Steve Wynn), instead of focusing on gossip sites that are simply repeating allegations previously reported by mainstream journals (besides I thought Joe liked the attention, as much as he puts himself in the limelight by his pleasant demeanor, humble attitude, and impeccable manners).

Thanks for the compliments - I generally find most of your posts to be insightful and witty as well...but let's see, Joe Francis paid out big bucks to settle a lawsuit by several underage girls which his company shot (and has another lawsuit pending, which includes a plaintiff claiming she was shot when she was just 13 years old), and Francis was alleged to have raped a girl (although he reportedly claimed he never had sex with anyone that night, only to have his lawyer later purportedly say that yes, he had sex with the girl whom claimed rape, but that it was consensual sex).

Joe Francis is such an upstanding, top notch guy, that he pled no contest to child abuse, and was convicted of child abuse.

I could go on, but I really don't care that much about Joe Francis, just that people know what a douchebag he is, and how deserving he is of the title, Douche of the Decade.

This is America.. the justice system isn't about justice... its about whether or not you can afford the fight ;)

And so far Joe Francis has been able to afford the fight, by getting evidence suppressed, settling with accusers, and pleading no contest to child abuse (among other things), but avoiding any true hard time.

Something tells me Joe's luck, along with his bankroll, is running out...

I haven't seen his debits and credits, but the GGW empire ain't what it used to be. I think saying that he's blowing through cash faster than he's bringing it in these last few years is a fairly reasonable assumption.

Legal fees must be huge. He needs to hire some handlers to protect him from himself at this point.

The problem for Francis is a little case called New York Times v. Sullivan and the standard it set in terms of a public figure proving defamation on the part of a media outlet. That standard is very, very high. Cases like Sullivan and Falwell v. Flynt are the reason you rarely see defamation cases brought against the media these days, and even more rarely see one succeed.

This lawsuit threat against Gawker will likely never become an actual lawsuit. Francis has very little chance of winning (I'd say next to no chance), and his attorneys have probably already advised him accordingly.
