Regardless of his performance or your personal relationship with him I would fire him immediately. He is a liability, there are plenty of quality coders that aren't meth addicts. :2 cents:

Agent 488 12-29-2009 04:57 AM

send him some lightbulbs for xmas.

iSpyCams 12-29-2009 06:12 AM

Just make sure you aren't dependent on him for anything, cause the main problem with these guys is they cannot be relied on for anything and will lose their shit on you the second you need them most.

Get a backup in place and phase him out slowly, any work you give him, make sure he isn't the only option you have to get it done.

And make sure he doesn't have access to anything of yours that could be worth money. (keys, passwords, etc.)

Alcoholics arte just as bad as meth addicts, and this place is filled with alcoholics who want you to trust them with your business/money. How many people in this thread couldnt go 5 years without a drink? A week? LOL

There is no difference between an alcoholic and meth addicts imho. How many lives has alcohol ruined? ;) As someone whos been through AA, meth and alcohol are the same damn thing.

You can't help somebody that doesn't want to be helped.

I guess I am projecting and assuming he cares about his crew like I do.

If it were me I would offer what assistance would be within my means.

i think a meth addict can actually be a better worker than a drunk.

i dated a tweaker and would wake up to a totally clean apt.. granted she would also do her make up for hours and think we were talking about her..

i also dated a drunk would was not the cleanest and would get sloppy and physical when drinking.

both have their pros and cons. but i would never date a substance abuser again.. i don't like the competition

ajrocks 12-29-2009 07:49 AM

Fire them on the spot, change your locks and walk away. I've had the same thing happen and wish I had shut the door as soon as I found out. Too much drama and risk to have someone like that around your business.

SGS 12-29-2009 07:55 AM

I would replace him asap.

Agent 488 12-29-2009 09:33 AM

over there that's just part of their work culture. disengage yourself from drug propagnada here and see it in that light.

Thx!

Yup.. and he must be the one that should come out with that idea actually... rehab for meth is not an outside process but from the addict itself.

He has been talking it for 5 years already? :warning

So in your opinion ALL Europeans are alcoholics because they have 1-2 glasses of wine with dinner every night? :upsidedow

Besides seeing as YOU have been through AA you should also know that getting addicted to alcohol is a LOT harder then Meth, heroine, and the likes!
It also has a LOT less impact on the addicts surroundings, sure an alcoholic may destroy his family, but for a meth addict that is just the beginning.

Good story and great example. :thumbsup

Wiseman 12-29-2009 11:09 AM

oh and he's not Ill every second or 3rd day. He just ran out of meth and is sleeping!

L-Pink 12-29-2009 11:11 AM

This is why I do cocaine. It's not addicting. In fact I have friends that have done coke everyday for 20 years and they're not addicted.

I have been through this with several employees.

The problem will start to manifest itself in mood swings, lies, long periods of absences with bizarre excuses, lots of unnecessary drama, and a general lack of productivity. Depending on the state you live in you will need to handle it carefully so not to open yourself up for a lawsuit.

Don't be surprised if they tell you that they are in the process of trying to get clean. Don't fall for it This is typical addict manipulation to save their job.

CaptainHowdy 12-29-2009 11:46 AM

The magic of this biz it's that a coder on meth it's probably more reliable than one that doesn't... :/.

GAMMA303 12-29-2009 01:53 PM

I've known a few peeps who have gotten into this over th years.

Its all bad. You can hope that they get better but facts are facts.

If you want a little insight into Meth use watch "A scanner darkly" the psuedo drug I think it's called "Death" or "Vitamin D" was modeled after the writers friends who have fallen to meth over the years. At the end of the movie he lists their names and how they have fallen most with Organ Failure / Death or Schizophrenia. The movie is a good watch but then when you replace the drug with meth it has a very serious undertone.

Its a fuckin sad way to go, but you gotta get rid of him asap! Sorry to hear about this.

Drinking every 5 years makes you an alcoholic? ;)

trevesty 12-29-2009 02:04 PM

Well, given that you said he's always "sick", I'd say kick him to the curb. Sounds like he's got a pretty addictive personality and/or the meth just "took over". If he just did it every now and then to help finish up a big project more quickly, I'd say who gives a shit.

I hear that is very hard to anyone stop using Meth, especially when it's used for year.

I hired a handyman for $20 an hour that had amazing talent for this kind of thing. 2 months into the job I even asked him why he does not run his own company due to the great work he did. He explained he's been sober for 6 years and used meth for 20 years and had a felony record. Anyway, he had some problems at home and got back on that shit. In 3 months I watched him lose 45 pounds and everything he owned. He truly went crazy seeing imaginary things and his work went to pure shit plus he sold his rig and all his tools. A great guy, but I told him it was time to go and the house was 98% done. 2 months later I get a call from the Realtor telling me there is a guy at the house stealing all the appliances and destroyed a wall to pull the copper-wire out. $8k to fix all the damage.... get rid of him now.. You can not help these people unless "they" truly want help. Also, the chemical alters their brain so much that they will never be the same. Run.

True, and on top of that. How do you actually know it's not affecting his work? He has been using it for 5 years. Maybe if he laid off that shit he'd be 200% better. :2 cents:

i dont know many alcoholics that will rob their grandmother for a drink.

Agent 488 12-29-2009 11:31 PM

my only concern would be if he's shitting his pants. and then only is his desk was beside mine. though if he was a good coder and shit his pants i guess you could just move him outside.

Agent 488 12-29-2009 11:32 PM

meth makes you super-horny so he probably spends lots of time jerking his limp cock. don't smell his keyboard.

Anyone who drinks alcohol daily is surely an alcoholic, it doesn't matter what I think. The definition of alcoholic speaks for itelf. :1orglaugh

As someone who doesnt consume a drop of alcohol I have the priv of pointing out addicts.

wow you must not know any real drunks. AA is full of them, attend a meeting. If you think alcoholics do not steal to get drunk you are very naive regarding this topic. The streets are filled with homeless alcoholics who steal regularly.
