In my school, which was very average white America, they had reached the level of being a very big deal with a certain group of people but most people were just slightly aware of them. Also, the people in my school that were big time into them were generally the artsy weird kids (I was on the fringe of that group so I knew them pretty well) that the jocks made fun of regularly. It wasn't until after he killed himself that football players and stuff had heard of him as more than just an occasional name on MTV. Then they became obsessed by them. It is fair to say though that at the time he killed himself they were on the up anyway and probably would have broken through that barrier anyway but just not with as much as a sudden impact.

Oh and I agree that Pearl Jam was a better band but they were also pretty different bands that just happen to be around at the same time. The jocks and stuff loved Pearl Jam at the same time they artsy kids were into Nirvana.

Nirvana was huge in my school at the time. Even the 'popular kids' were all growing their hair out and wearing flannel plaid shirts over a t shirt. I was more into AIC and soundgarden personally but the whole grunge thing was definitly big among almost all crowds except for the 'wiggers/rappers' type.

Don't remember what I was doing, but it didn't bother me terribly. I mean I liked Nirvana's music and all, but I didn't know the guy personally, so why would it affect me on a personal level? Even back then (moreso now), the media paints pictures of the gruesome while laying sympathy on like thick blankets of feel-good sewage sheets. They try to make us feel sorry for each and every little detail...as if our lives are completely meaningless without their "guidance" and we need to be told how to "feel". Well, fuck them, and fuck anyone who falls for it. Anyways, to this day, I don't believe that it was a suicide. I can't prove otherwise, but there was never any solid proof that it WAS a suicide, plus there was actually evidence against it, indicating that it may very well have been a murder. The investigators simply brushed it off as "yet another celebrity death" and went merrily skipping down the lane like they always do in cases like this.

I was laughing hysterically and cheering. If I knew that he was like Obi-Wan Kenobi and would just get more powerful after death maybe I wouldn't have been so happy to see him dead.

We all had to endure the little wiggers from the suburbs wearing Tupac-style do rags and throwing the infamous W hand sign for years after his death. Lets not forget that California Love was pretty much on repeat on most top 40 stations as well as MTV.

I never cared about Tupac, but I found his death ironic considering the content of his raps.

I'm sure I heard it on the news but never cared for them so it was sad but not a huge deal to me, all the drugs they were doing it was inevitable.
