Listening to her songs that are on the radio I just don't get it. Her lyrics are simplistic at best, her beats could be from one of any number of producers. Other than her crazy "fashion" sense I don't find anything that truely seperates her from other "pop" singers out there.

epitome 02-23-2010 12:02 PM

P!nk is someone else I have a huge amount of respect for.

She was a wayward Philly druggie and dealer that was going nowhere in life. One day she decided to turn her life around and she did. When she was a teenager and her Mom was at work, she had all of the neighborhood kids over and dealt them K. She turned her Mom's house into a K house and kicked the kids out before her Mom got home.

Now, wanting to be different, she learned air stunts, which she does while singing 100% live at every show.

While most of her songs are written by others, they are based on her life experiences and she spends A LOT of time with her writers trying to come up with the perfect song.

One of my favorite performances is also one of her most recent...the Grammy's. It won't let me embed:

Sadly, that is what's required if you want to "make it" today.

Her "vintage" stuff is some of her most amazing ... it also won't get played tens of millions of times on the radio, sell millions of copies or sell out arenas.

That is the audience's fault.

Persius 02-23-2010 12:06 PM

Shes so fuckin annoying

justinsain 02-23-2010 12:10 PM

I'm sooooooo sick and tired of watching a bunch of thugs on stage spending at least half their performance yelling " let me here ya say yeah! " while they grab their crotch infecting a generation with the notion that being ghetto is glamorous. I'm really hoping she can change the direction of music.

Given the choice of her or the thugs, I'm going GaGa.

will she be still going in 20years time??? I think not!

I don't understand how it is the audiences fault? If it was that amazing, why was it not selling? There are many many intelligent, articulate, interesting performers/bands out there who don't wear lampshades as head wear. That was her choice, as is her current style of music. As a listener of music, I choose not to listen to hers.

I dont see how you can seriously say thats the audiences fault. Nobody is going to run news stories and gossip columns and drum up hype about a generic lounge singer, no matter how well they play and/or sing. And thats it really.

"Lady Gaga" is a creation with Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta playing the lead role. It's supposed to be art and it's supposed to make money.

If it wasn't for Perez Hilton and his constant promotion Lady Gaga would be nowhere. I wonder if he gets a cut of her sales.

She is a floppy titted no talent. Even mentioning Madonna in comparison is offensive.

I think I figured out why that performance was so "special."

She smiles.

When you're watching the performance, you can almost see the thought forming in her head: "Holy fuck, I'm playing the piano with SIR FUCKING ELTON JOHN while doing a duet of MY song!"

It's the moment she realizes and finally acknowledges to herself that she's a big fucking deal and she cannot help but to drop the Gaga persona and be a happing and beaming Stefani G., just a regular ol' girl that achieved her dream of making it big.

That auditorium was packed with people but for a few moments, as far as she was concerned, there were just two people: her and Elton John.

It's actually pretty powerful and if you're an artist, the best "high" you'll ever get from your drug of choice.

What's it matter?

She's made her mark already, with good financial sense she will be set for life and her music will be archived and go on for as long as music is available.

Now think of ALL the people that aspired to do what she's done and never even came close.

True. Let's chop the last 5 words from my post. Everything else remains the same.

Then again, maybe not. A generic lounge singer could make it big if the audience demanded it. I'm excited by what Susan Boyle did and hope that we'll be seeing a gradual shift from manufactured pop images.

The problem with the Susan Boyle phenomenon is that every record label is looking for the "next Susan Boyle," not realizing that there are many variables that made Susan Boyle into such a success ... her voice was just the icing on the cake.

I'm curious of what you thought of Britney Spears in 1999. I'd bet you called that one wrong, too. Most people gave her two years.

I see that too and that's one of the reasons I like her. She's not manufactured by some record company like so many " artists " are. Her performance comes from within and is original. I've always had big aspirations and I like it when someone fulfills theirs. If the girl in the green dress playing the piano had dreamed of one day rockin' the world with her music and later finds herself onstage in front of her peers doing a duet with Elton John I have to giver her respect.

Yeah those are some terrible lyrics... and her popular songs are loaded with head scratching crap like that. If you look at here pre-gaga stuff though you can see that something is there, even in her lyrics.. i guess the masses have spoken as to what makes a song popular though :) unfortunate.

webair 02-23-2010 02:31 PM

I disagree with everything...She is AMAZING LIVE! I will admit her songs are a bit played ...

and think that tit pic is a bad photochop.

seeric 02-23-2010 02:34 PM

this very thread proves her rise to stardom. controversy breeds attention which breeds people hearing about you. i could take or leave her. my girlfriend loves her. we went to the concert and i actually liked it. but when you get two sides arguing over you and you get to people's core emotions, you drive them to scream to be heard, thus inciting people to create content about you for others to see. and the cycle repeats again.

she went where the money is. sounds smart enough to me.

Tom_PM 02-23-2010 02:40 PM

Ahh, I was going to mention Susan Boyle too. Now I admit, I have not even to this day ever heard her complete song. What I saw was on the newscasts every day for weeks (months possibly?). I never watched that talent show thingy.

Again, it was not only her singing, it was the media. If you can get into the news cycle and potential to get there again, and you dont overly suck, you will be a hit. If Susan Boyle punched out a taxi cab driver tomorrow, it'd be on the AP and Reuters news wires, and all over yahoo and google news and every media outlet that has any ties to western civilization, hehe.

Susan Boyle the singer was singing years and years before that show was on and the world never noticed her. There are youtube clips of her singing beautifully in small rooms and clubs. And yet, nobody had heard of her before she thrust before our faces.

When she was a teenager, she was an outcast. She grew up on the upper east side in a well to do family and was always the awkward artsy kid that just didn't fit in. She was a loner in a world she didn't feel like she belonged in.

Her message to her fans is come as you are. All of the social outcasts love her because she is who she wants to be and doesn't care what people think about it. That's why she calls her fans her "little monsters" ... because they're pretty, ugly, skinny, fat, "normal," "crazy" and everything in between.

When she was just Stefani, before the Lady Gaga, she found comfort and acceptance in the New York underground art scene.

What many do not realize is that she is behind her image 100%. She designs all of her own outfits, she does most set designs, etc.

She is 100% in control of her image.

The rumor going around now -- and I believe it -- is that she's burning out. She knows that to stay relevant she has to stay public, so she's trying to do too many shows, too many interviews, too many appearances and she's busy designing her shows from start to finish...feeling the need to make each one different...different props, different costumes, different set lists, etc.

There is probably nobody in show business that works as hard as she does.

I totally love me some Gaga, and I think you are dead on with all your comments, including the ones about trying to do too much.

If thugs and Lady Gaga were all music had to offer, I'd have given up on music a long time ago.

CosmicTang 02-23-2010 03:41 PM

The point isn't whether or not one likes her music. That's a matter of taste. The point is whether or not she's talented. I think most would agree that her pre-Gaga stuff is very good. And being a student at the Tisch School of the Arts is no small accomplishment.

Funny someone mentioned Norah Jones as a comparison to her pre-GaGa days. Jones had the advantage of being an insider. Her father is Ravi Shankar who is huge in the music world and her mother was a concert producer. When the music industry wouldn't embrace her as Stefanie Germanotta she invented Lady GaGa. I think it was part necessity and part 'fuck you'.

The same record companies that wouldn't give her the time of day would now chop off an arm to have a piece of her. To be able to do all that takes talent. Madonna has those marketing chops for sure, but she can't hold a candle to her musically.

As for longevity, very few acts stay around for 20 years (even The Beatles only managed about 7 or 8). And some that do stay around for long periods sell out or become irrelevant (see: The Rolling Stones).

I am interested to see if she eventually goes back to the jazzy persona. I don't think she can keep up the larger-than-life Lady GaGa character forever. Even Elton John put away the duck suit and huge sunnies at some point.

Then you must watch the clip from America's Got Talent. That all plays into why she was so big. The way she walked on stage nervous, fumbling her words, the way the judges and audience laughed at her, the way she looked terrified ... and then the moment she opened her mouth... The media didn't start Susan Boyle, outside of the UK, it went viral on YouTube. The media latched onto her when they noticed everyone was talking about her. The astronomically high YouTube video count is why she got so famous.

NOBODY was looking for Susan Boyle, that is why nobody found her. If you believe her version of the story, she wasn't looking for herself, either. It was all about trying to appease her recently deceased mother.

There is a heartwarming story behind Susan Boyle; from her outcast life, the rock in her life dying, overcoming fear, etc. that gave us THE Susan Boyle. The story helps to sell Susan Boyle. Yes, her voice is amazing, but her story combined with her voice, is why people fell in love with her.

People were finally rooting for the underdog and that underdog was Susan Boyle.
