Amounts to the same thing in the end, although slightly more favorable for McChrystal. At least it shows he's still sane. And you have to admit, it's shorter than "General McChrystal Offers Resignation And Pres Accepts It, Then Makes Speech!"

sortie 06-23-2010 11:06 AM

LOL @ people saying he resigned and wasn't fired as if he had a chance in hell of
not being fired if he didn't resign. :1orglaugh

I like the presidents speech, but it should have been the truth, something like
"the war is bigger than any one man or woman, it's bigger than the president, it's about my ego! Just shows more proof how thin skinned he is

Although knowing about the UCMJ and that shouldn't be tolerated, he did a damn good job over there and Obama should have handled it differently. I haven't read the Rolling Stone article, but heard on the news it really wasn't that bad.
As far as the resignation, I'm sure he was asked to resign, which is the same as being fired

dyna mo 06-23-2010 11:17 AM

McChrystal will now be earning $100k per motivational speaking engagement.

And HE was in charge of the army... no wonder it's still a clusterfuck over there

It has nothing to do with the Pres. being "thin skinned". When will you guys figure this out? Speaking as a lowly ex-Specialist from 1st Infantry, I can tell you with full confidence that the people in the military are taught from Day 1, not only to take & carry out orders, but to respect their superiors and most definitely not publicly mock them. So what does that tell us?

1. General McChrystal was well aware of that.
2. The soldiers he commands look to him for leadership. If he's opposed to the Pres.' war strategy, what are the ground troops supposed to do? This is a distraction they do not need and a decision they should never have to make.
3. The US has always been commanded by civilian leadership. The military works for us. Even 4 Star Generals don't get to usurp that. This General has fucked up more than once, and been warned, more than once.
4. What kind of message does it send to our enemies when the General in charge of the theater disagrees with the President? I'll tell you... it makes us weak.

And for the record, I disagree with the Pres. too. I think we need to get the fuck out of Afghanistan. But it's not going to happen. :2 cents:

Nowhere in the Rolling Stone piece does McChrystal challenge Obama on his policy or his strategy. Nowhere is he insubordinate. He is, everyone says, a marvelous military man (although, given his role in the cover-up of the friendly fire death of Cpl. Pat Tillman, the former NFL star, he is a bit of a liar, as well). But he has an impossible task: a war that cannot be won. If he doesn?t know it, then Staff Sgt. Kennith Hicks sure does.

You can't send more troops into a region and expect LESS casualties.

I'm not sure what the point of this is.

If Obama pulls out of Afghanistan he will be crucified for it.

Too many people here think they have all of the fucking answers, yet none of them make a stitch of fucking sense. :2 cents:

You're quoting an opinion piece?

theking 06-23-2010 12:03 PM

General McCrystal came up via special operation forces...and they are a different breed of soldier and most of them never become a 4 star General. Apparently he was very good at special operations/black op's and it is clear that he should have been left in that role. It is unforunate for him and unforunate for the Army to lose him...over such BS...but for the role he was placed in by this President he needed to be fired...for stupidity if for no other reason.

your ability to be obtuse is impressive.

vendzilla commented he thought troop casualties were decreasing, they aren't. that's the point of my posting that. it can't be that hard to see that unless you simply are wanting to argue and point fingers at others, which is all you do want to do.

based on this, imo, obama should of sent a clear message to the troops by refusing the resignation, firing the general and proceeding with a court marshall.

And I have to admit, I haven't been keeping up on the war, I have a total and complete distaste for it. I know it's stupid at this or any point, I don't care who got us there. It just needs to stop. And any delay is unacceptable.

I loved the way we went after a country that attacked us, but we didn't need to hang around after that

so I'm interested to hear what the libs on this board think of the fact that Obama put General "Betray-us", (as Move-on.org and all the Libs called him), in command in Afghanistan now....

I'm truly curious to hear what you all think....

Does that mean it would have been OK for McChrystal to give Obama the finger?

The left hasn't been truly happy with Obama on MANY issues so far.

If you are a super left-wing liberal progressive, Obama has disappointed you time after time.

That said, they will all vote him back in in 2012, because as much as Obama has not gone left enough, he is still a more acceptable option than a republican.

It really just shows how much the right hates Obama. Even when he tries to appease the center, he is still called every name under the book.

He is an intelligent person, who actually THINKS before he acts. He will be re-elected.
