Meet The Mega Millions Winner (Mug Shot)

This lovely couple (pics of their mug shots) won half of the Mega Millions jackpot ($190 Million). The "estranged husband" has a long and distinguished record, i.e., domestic battery, drug possession and buying alcohol for a minor.

I'm guessing half of the money will go to the lawyers representing the wife who isn't going to want to give a dime to the husband.

Well, I guess on the bright side that will be 190 million that will be put right back into the economy because I would venture to guess they will piss it all away.

Wow, a prime example of why such large lottery jackpots are a bad idea.

With that said, after taking the cash option (I assume she's taking that) drops it down to around $100 million, and then taxes will further drop it down to $50 million ...

On aside, the state where one buys a Megaball / Powerball ticket can make a big difference in taxation ... for example, in Pennsylvania, there's no state tax on lottery winnings whereas in Idaho, where she won, the state rate is an exorbitant 7.8%...

Bad, but there are some states even worse - probably the worst state to win the lottery in is New Hampshire - they levy a separate 10% Gambling tax on gross winnings (from my understanding, losses can't be offset unlike with many other states and federal tax)... and to make matters worse, people who won before the tax even existed get hit with the 10% tax too - another risk of taking an annuity verses all cash upfront.

Rambling on, but where one buys a ticket can make a big difference in the tax they pay - many players don't realize that each state administers Megaball / Powerball separately with each maintaining its own database of selected numbers...

Also, states that participate can have difffering play (ie. some states don't offer the megaplier option) and payout rules, such as California in which payouts for lower prizes, which are typically fixed, are parimutuel - sometimes that's works out great for players, but often not with winners getting far less than in neighboring states.

Sucks if she has to share it with him, but also sucks that everyone's digging up in her personal biz and airing her mugshot on national television.

Reading the ABC article they were both arrested that day for battery, and he was arrested for battery and breaking a no contact order. Can't say for sure w/o reading the arrest report, but this fucker did beat her before, maybe she just finally fought back?

I got no idea what this chick is like or what kind of life decissions she's made, probably not the best, but it seems like she's getting trashed for his actions. Just seems like alot of public humiliation being toppled on a chick who's in a shitty spot she's been trying to get out of.

people hate people who win these things. the media loves to hear how they are broke after a year or two.

beerptrol 01-15-2011 06:41 PM

Yep, most all state lotteries require public disclosure of winners.

State of Delaware is among the exceptions - they allow winners to keep their identity confidential.

Setting up a blind trust / legal entity prior to claiming is a work-around for winners in other states to keep their identity private, but not as iron-clad; not an option for some lotteries that require winners to be live persons.

in megaball cash option is about 63% of jackpot. So she would get about $120 mil. 7.8% of that for Iadaho tax is $9.4 million. Not sure if she gets to deduct that $9.4 mil off her income for federal taxes. Usually you do in work income not sure here. Even if not max federal rate is 35%. So she'll get at least $69 mil but could be as high a s $72 if she gets the deduction.

You're right, about $70 million - that's more than I thought. I know Megaball has a better cash option payout percentage, but didn't realize could it be upwards of 60% - that's a heck of lot better than Powerball's roughly 50%.

Still though, if she'd won that ticket in say Pennsylvania, she'd be getting an extra $6+ million ... sure, that seems like chump change when one wins $70+ million, but with the speed at which some big jackpot winners blow their money, every little bit could be the difference between having something and nothing - they're going to have every shyster, schemer, con, and of course lots of "long lost" friends and family members, including some they never knew existed, seeking money.

CamsMaster 01-16-2011 08:32 AM

TheDA 01-16-2011 09:03 AM

Good for her, I hope she enjoys it. Shitty that they gave out her name. No way I'd go public with my identity if I won the lottery here.

MaDalton 01-16-2011 09:25 AM

over here they don't give out your names, they even help you on how to hide it from people if you want to

i wouldn't want anyone to know either, you'll be getting flooded by letters and calls from people who beg for money
