Just saw this pic of a guy taking some pepper spray right in the face yesterday here in Portland. He couldn't have planned to be in a worse position to get it.

Now that I look closer it might be a woman. I saw him/her get blasted on the news last night and thought it was a guy. When I went to the new station's website I saw the pic. . . but from that angle it does look more like a woman.

From the looks of it, it looks like she was used as a human pepper spray shield.. :(

some dude mixed up in that G20 Toronto was all ired up and making a big stink.. one day this guy is all 'yea gungho, lets go protest some more' blah blah.. one click on his profile shows several people in different police networks across two countries.

his exact words after this was pointed out were: 'police are concerned too'

I found the video. It doesn't say much other than that was a pic snapped of the action and that she was arrested shortly after and should be released soon.

Here is the video. You can see kind of what was going on in the area of where she go sprayed. They talk about here around the 3 minute mark.

What was happening is that they had been protesting for a handful of hours and were told by the police that so long as they stayed on the sidewalk and didn't block streets so traffic could get through everything was fine. Eventually they decided to block the streets and the police were trying to push them back onto the sidewalk and the confrontation started.

It wont be long and some crack pot will start shooting the cops. That's where this is all leading. The cops can't keep abusing their power with out someone somewhere returning the favor.

These police men are a strong force. Pepper spray in the face is unfortunate. It's not clear whether it's a man or a woman. The police sure have a lot of armor, helmets and shields to protect them.

I have no idea who those people are or if they played any role in what has been going on here. I have no idea if any of them have been maced or not. Here is what I know. These people were told that if they stayed on the sidewalk and didn't block traffic everything would be cool and for many hours that is exactly what happened. When they decided to block the streets and push on the police things got heated.

what i am saying is the reason the 'police got heated' is bullshit. there is other protests.. namely one that occurs every month, that SOLELY BLOCKS TRAFFIC

Actually, on that point, yesterday's protests started off with a sit in on a bridge that blocked traffic on it. The police were calm and cool and arrested those who were sitting in and there were no issues.

I think the differences here is that the crowd was pushing on them and were getting pretty riled up. Check out the video I have linked above and you can see people pushing back. To me it is different from just sitting and being peaceful. Just the night before there were some incidents where those in the crowd injured a few cops by throwing bottles at at them.

If these children's parents would have disciplined them at home at some point during their useless lives we would not have to see them running wild like a pack of dogs on the streets. If that was my kid I would beat some sense into him/her/it.

No, Richard, I wasn't kidding. I was asking a key question pertinant to the situation, it's what critical thinkers whose reactions aren't driven solely by their emotions do.

While anyone who knows me personally knows I harbor no great love for cops, and that I've never been a cop, I have actually had experience with being on the side of security and having to face down or otherwise deal with a group of agitated people. And those experiences tell me that it's often in the cop's (or security personnel's) best interest to single out the few (or the one) main agitator who is stirring the rest up the most with his or her yappy mouth, aggressive actions, or a combo of both, and neutralize thier foolishness before the situation gets even more out of hand.

I also know that for the most part it's not law enforcement's habit of just smacking people around and macing/tasering them without reason or some sort of provocation. I say "for the most part" because I realize there have been exceptions. But I think it's safe to say that in most cases the cop or cops as it were don't just act without provocation.

So I ask again, what if anything might this person have been doing to get her a faceful of riot cop ownage?

If the actual unequivocal answer is "nothing, she was just there, she was innocent", as unlikely as that would be, then I'm completely with you guys who are leaping to her defense.

However, if it turns out that she was loudly running her mouth, shouting obscenities at the cops, getting in their faces (all of which are things that often stir up mobs and incite escalation) then I'm sorry but it then falls into a "you get what you get" situation. I mean, for example, if there's a pot of boiling water on the stove and you know that if you stick your hand in it you're going to get scalded badly, and you go ahead and stick your hand in there anyway, then of course you get what you get. Here is no different. Everyone with any sense knows that if you disobey riot cops and stir shit up and get in their faces, yell, fire up the mob, maybe throw some stuff at them, etc, that you in all likelyhood are putting yourself at risk for a beatdown, macing, tasering, rubber bullet hits, or worse.
