Facebook said the pictures violate the company's policy on obscene, pornographic or sexually-explicit material, because of the display of the aureola - the dark skin around the nipple. Reportedly, it had also threatened to terminate accounts of people who do not comply with such policy.

"We agree that breast-feeding is natural and beautiful, and we're very glad to know that it is so important to some mothers to share this experience with others on Facebook," said Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt.

The company insists it is not about obscenity, but more about safety. The policies are to ensure the site remains safe, secure and trusted by its users, who also include teenagers.

Sex itself is not either pornographic nor obscene though either. Read their own TOS. Has nothing to do with it being in public. If someone takes a picture in their own home of them having sex and shares it online. No laws have been broken.

Plus this comes down to common sense, if you take a picture of a friend eating and post that somewhere with his/her permission that's cool. The picture is maybe something funny to you both and it's just showing off the good time you and your friend had. It has purpose that does not involve you pushing some agenda or pushing your private life on unsuspecting friends/surfers. I dont think that is to hard to understand. They are not telling you that its illegal for you to join if you are 18 or older, but that the site is intended solely for KIDS, and you should only join if you can agree that is the kind of community you want to support
