Can You Name 3 Current, Real, Rock N Roll Bands?
Is there any such thing as a current Rock N Roll band anymore?
|
depends on your definition of rock i guess. also keep in mind there is a lot more out there than the crap they repeat over and over again on the radio.
|
Nickelback ?? ;)
|
My good friend, The Classic Rock Guru, insists there are but two "real" rock 'n roll bands left, if by 'real' you mean anyone who still has a semblance of integrity and views music as transformative art:
1. Pearl Jam 2. U2 and I nominate a third: 3. Counting Crows (R.I.P. The Cranberries & The Wallflowers) Oh, I could go on and on and on and on.... |
Music doesnt thrive selling the same old shit. & rock went stale 20 years ago.
|
AC/DC is still kicking it, Metallica not so much as before, but still alive. I hear Alice In Chains has a new front man and is touring again.
|
Alice in Chains...don't keep up with any other current bands at the moment that I could get away with calling a "real rock band" since I know how people here feel about 311, but caught the new AIC recently and was amazed...took me back to mid 90s goodness.

These are dark days for such fantasies, I'll admit. |
Creed, Nickelback, Pearl Jam
all gay as fuck... |
By current I meant a real rock and roll band that has achieved fame within the past 5 or 10 years.
With all of today's insanity, political chaos, wars, etc... you would think there would be a new rock band forming every fucking week! It really seems like a lazy, anti-social, unmotivated, sedentary generation.... |

what fucking crack are you smoking? either change your musical tastes and follow the message where it takes you. or deal with people playing washed up regurgitated music, in a musical genre that just isn't that exciting anymore. What exactly do you consider "rock n' roll" anyways? |
You know, today's Guns N Roses - today's Van Halen, etc.
Going back further: today's Beetles, today's Rolling Stones, etc. |
Chickenfoot
and... and... Well, thats one. |

As far as bands currently charting in the genre, Bon Jovi, Slayer, Foo Fighters, Muse, Alice in Chains (as mentioned), Pearl Jam (mentioned), AFI, Death Cab For Cutie, Cage The Elephant (who are really growing on me), Daughtry, Bob Dylan, Foreigner, Hollywood Undead, Green Day, Megadeth, the list goes on. Some old, some new, all moving significant product right now in November 2009.

And Green Day, fuck, don't even get me started. Just mention ofthat fucking band makes my blood boil. Aside from Slayer, that whole list is garbage. :helpme |

But then I heard "Last of the American Girls" - and then all was forgiven. I know most people here see anything commercial as a complete sell-out and certainly not worthy of praise. But that is a *great* - and I mean *A FUCKING GREAT* - pop record. :thumbsup |
I really like TOOL

Spinal Tap!!!!!
oh wait |
wolfmother
sons of leon priestess |
|
interpol
the editors |
oh, supposed to be 3... hmm, the arcade fire maybe? don't know if that's really rock though.
|
Morrissey's band ROCKS!
|
I think the OP means bands that created their bands since lets say 1980 to current. Pre 80 is way to old to be current, even if they remain current.

britney spears
lady gaga beyonce hello!!! ;) |
Ain't easy these days, rock has become something that has to be "mainstream" and "acceptable", it's not the revolt that filled the air for decades anymore, it just translates into another artificial genre that is supposed to fill 3 minutes of air time with something dull and tasteless, that eventually forces someones subconscious mind to buy it.
You open a Rolling Stone magazine and even their editors do write mainly about older proven acts that still tour and release albums, since there's not that much to write about with the "current" bands, that are busy to fulfill their "record 5 shitty records till we keep you on MTV" contracts. Times when certain strong movements (punk rock, new wave, thrash, grunge, trip hop, even nu-metal used to have its cult audience before it went hype etc.) got their chance and piece of the mass media pie seem to be over for well over a decade. |

But that's what I admire in a commercial band - the ability to make great commercial music. I want a great tune and a killer hook, not fake angst and meaning :) |
