While the Gulf is being poisoned, BP CEO goes yachting

As oil spews in Gulf, BP chief at UK yacht race - Jun 2010

(06-19) 10:06 PDT LONDON, United Kingdom (AP) --

In what one environmentalist described as "yet another public relations disaster" for embattled energy giant BP, CEO Tony Hayward took time off Saturday to attend a glitzy yacht race around England's Isle of Wight. BP spokespeople rushed to defend Hayward, who has drawn withering criticism as the public face of BP's halting efforts to stop the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

Spokeswoman Sheila Williams said Hayward took a break from overseeing BP efforts to stem the undersea gusher in Gulf of Mexico so he could watch his boat "Bob" participate in the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race. "He's spending a few hours with his family at a weekend. I'm sure that everyone would understand that," Wine said Saturday. "He will be back to deal with the response. It doesn't detract from that at all."

Still, hobnobbing with millionaires and their yachts is likely to be a hard sell in the Gulf, which is struggling to deal with up to 120 million gallons of oil that have escaped from the blown-out well.

:2 cents: Glad Hayward isn't losing any sleep or anything. We know how hard his life is.

He's been taken off the job of over seeing the Gulf oil spill and not before time. He's a PR nightmare.

Sorry, I looked but didn't see this here anywhere. I apologize if I stepped on a similar thread. It wasn't intentional.

Well, I don't know. Maybe at least give the appearance that he's concerned about it and not flaunt his wealth and disinterest by going to yacht races while this is still ongoing?

I believe the old man that said the oil will leak for 40 years if they don't nuke it already...

It's not that he doesn't care, but life moves on, there is nothing he can do about it...
the news piece is just an excuse to stir shit up, the oil leak will likely go on for the next 3 months, of course he will be spotted doing more fun stuff during that time...

Well sure, but you can't deny it's a horrible PR move for their company, at a time when they need all the help they can get. So not only is it a bad decision on the part of a CEO who should have the sense to know better, but BP as a company should be pissed off at him for continuing to do things that make them look even worse than they already do.

I mean shit... is the guy really that dumb? How did he ever get that position? It's no different than AIG taking billions in bailout, then hosting extravagant excursions in the $400k range the very next week and passing out bonuses.

dyna mo 06-19-2010 11:15 AM

they care about the small people.

they said so and that's good enough for me, i'm american!

ottopottomouse 06-19-2010 11:16 AM

Whatever he does people will complain about it. It's not like he would be actually doing anything clean-up related if he wasn't at the race and it's 1800 boats not really something elitist.

Maybe he should be having cameras follow him around while he searches for a solution to plugging the hole and cleaning up the destruction, since they admittedly have no plan whatsoever at this time. What are they paying this guy for anyway?

No idea what they are paying him for but last time I had a real job you were allowed to not go in at weekends and do things for yourself.

Did the last job you had cause the biggest environmental disaster in our history? It's not like he's taking a weekend off from working at Subway.

on a positive note, i just read that 1 of the relief wells is now <200 feet away from the busted well and ahead of schedule.

Is it 200 now for real? I thought they were at 2000 away last night?

well(yuk yuk), it's hard to figure out what they mean- here's a quote

Quote:

The relief well being drilled by the Development Driller III has reached 15,936 ft of its 18,000-ft target, Kent Wells, senior vice-president of exploration and production, told reporters during a June 18 technical briefing from BP?s west Houston offices.
Wells believes the relief well already is within 200 ft of the Macondo well, but the pace will slow as the relief well finds and closes in on the Macondo well, he said.

dyna mo 06-19-2010 11:31 AM

ahh, more info:

The first well also was within 200 feet (61 metres) of the side of the blown-out well, but had to continue drilling down to find the right intersect point.

dyna mo 06-19-2010 11:32 AM

i guess it's still good news- they are ahead of schedule.

The Porn Nerd 06-19-2010 11:35 AM

Corporations are people, according to the Supreme Court.
So BP is a dick.
What else is new?
Think I'll incorporate myself so i can get away with all kinds of shit and say 'Fuck you' to the world and go watch some yachts race.

bp has a history of putting profits before safety, that's a policy that comes straight from the top.

I think Carl-Henric Svanberg is the actual top but then he's Swedish so safe from any of the anti-British sentiments which come from the company being called British Petroleum.

I'm not really sticking up for them but i'm just digging myself a big fucking hole aren't I.

i hear ya, i don't think you are sticking up for them it's a convoluted cluster fuck of a nightmare. syanberg is swedish, his little people comment was translated incorrectly, to give him the benefit of the doubt. and the media is certainly jumping on the anti-brit bandwagon. :)

waiting for a TeaBagger apologist to straighten out the Libsss on this issue....

The yacht race was most likely scheduled before the spill happened, which makes it perfectly ok for him to be competing in it.

When you have a race to attend, you show up. It's the way of things.

He only had a boat in the race, he wasn't in the race himself. He was not required to be there. And if the oil gushing out by the millions of gallons had been where the race was, maybe he would have given a shit.

I see, your thread title made it sound like he was racing himself.. and I did not read the 2nd paragraph properly.

So are you saying he shouldn't have a social life or be seen in public until the spill is resolved?

No, but maybe something a little less high profile wouldn't hurt. I mean, they are all worried about their workers speaking to the media, and then their own CEO derails the PR machine yet again. If I was the Swedish guy in charge, Hayward would have actual duct tape over his mouth by now and be confined to BP headquarters. The guy is a walking poster child for oil industry arrogance.
