If the pilot light stays lit after releasing the button you should be able to turn up the thermostat above the current temperature to start the heater. Not sure why doing so would cause the pilot light to go out but make sure the green pilot light dial is turned all the way up and if you have any main gas valve you have adjusted make sure it is turned on all the way.
