Help me turn my heater's pilot light on (pics inside) - GoFuckYourself.com

The pilot light for my heater turned off.

I read online that you turn the knob to pilot and then press the reset button while you light it but where is the reset button? I dont have it?>

Also, i forgot where the flame or fire is supposed to go... Is it here, in this circle thing?

Also, I don't have a lighter. I have to go out and buy one

I'm cold.

I think it just turned off by itself; that happens sometimes. Do all heaters have a reset button or will it light up if I just put a flame/lighter on the circle thing and turn the knob to "on"?

I DID. There were many articles on how to do it but they said to push a RESET button which I dont have. If you read my thread you would see that I wrote "I read online that you turn the knob to pilot and then press the reset button while you light it but where is the reset button? I dont have it?"

"I READ ONLINE" means that I used Google obviously.

I ALWAYS USE GOOGLE FIRST. I only ask on GFY as a last resort.

If it turns itself off, the gas control valve or thermocouple is bad. the thermocouple tells the gas control valve that the pilot is on. It generates a tiny electrical current when its hot. if the pilot goes out, the current is not there and the control valve turns off the gas. So if either goes bad, it shuts itself off.

I'm not familiar with your furnace but they generaly work like this:

Turn the gas off. Then turn it back to "low" or "light" or "pilot"

Press that safety button, hold it, and light the pilot. Keep holding the safety button down for about a minute. The let it go and see if your pilot stays lit. If it does, turn your gas valve back to where it normaly is.

If you cant find where to light the pilot, just look for a small gas line and follow it, you should be able to figure it out.

There are usually instructions on how to do this on the inside of the access door. But, turning on the gas and waving an open flame around doesn't sound like the best plan of action to me.

I've only had experience with oil fueled furnaces. If that's what your furnace is, the usual problem I run into is air in the fuel line. It simply means you have to bleed the line a bit by opening a valve and letting some fuel run through for a while, and then it will be able to light itself.

I don't know about a reset button, but normally you press down on the knob after turning it and keep it pressed for 30 full seconds after lighting it. They may be referring to that as the reset button. The knob is visible in the first picture. Count one-thousand one, one-thousand two, etc. all the way to thirty as your thumb gets fatigued.

You light it at the top of the two things sticking up in the third picture. One is the gas for the pilot light. The other is the thermocouple, which is just a sensor to detect when the pilot goes out. You may need to hold the lighter (or twisted paper) well beneath the spot where the pilot flame will be, allowing the lighter flame reach up to light the pilot. Move the lighter around a bit until the pilot is lit.

If the lighter is lit for more than twenty seconds, allow it to cool before trying again.

If it goes out often, the thermocouple MAY need to be replaced, but first check if both covers are properly in place, and check for any drafts. A draft can certainly blow out the pilot flame.

However, I dont know which one is the one for the pilot light, like which part am I supposed to put the flame in? You said in the third picture there are two parts sticking out; I don't know which parts you mean... Both those parts are attached to wires...

Diagrams on the net dont help because all the furnaces look different than mine..

There are no instructions behind the door that i can read... i just dont know which area to light..

Tell me where to light it

On top of these two tubs or between the tubes in the middle? im thinking it cant be on top because the tubes are solid; there is nowhere for the flame to go.

Trace where your gas comes into the room where your furnace is. There should be a main on off valve before it goes into the furnace. Turn it off and wait a few minutes. Then turn it on, and turn the green dial on your furnace to pilot, start, on, something like that and hold it in if you can. You should hear a hissing sound which is the gas coming out. Then turn on your lighter and wave it around where you normally see flames. If it does not catch, stop after a few seconds and repeat. The reason to stop and repeat is that you do not want to be waving that lighter around for more than a couple seconds as gas is being put out. The place to place the lighter is where the gas comes out, probably above the two tubes - see if there is a hole or compartment above the two tubes in the photo where you can stick the lighter in. You may need to remove an additional cover above those two tubes in the photo. If you have a pilot light dial that pushes in, keep it pushed in after it lights for 30 seconds before releasing it or it may go back out.

Thank you. I can't get the flame to catch. I'll wait until Tuesday and then ask the apt manager to take care of it for me and will just use a space heater for now.

Probably wise idea, looking at the photo again, I suspect you or they will probably need to remove another cover above those two tubes if there is no hole above there to stick the lighter in there.

Oh, it works now. I had to angle the lighter and place the flame way at the top but from the side. Didnt have to remove the cover. Held button for seconds and its on.

How long can I wait before i can turn the heater on? i tried turning it on right away but that made the pilot light go off (I turned the light back on). Do I have to wait before i can turn the heater on?

If the pilot light stays lit after releasing the button you should be able to turn up the thermostat above the current temperature to start the heater. Sometimes when the gas coming out to light the pilot light is so little turning on the heater will divert enough gas from it to the rest of the burners to cause the pilot light to go out so make sure the green pilot light dial is turned all the way up and if you have any main gas valve you have adjusted make sure it is turned on all the way.

It stays on when released, it goes out when the heater goes on. Think pilot is not turned all the way up.
