The group referred to above (no i didn't watch the video) are called Vore v Zkone. Thieves in Law (not thieves "by" law). On top of everything else, Yeltin's attack on the KGB, his fragmenting the organization, cutting their funding etc as the result of the failed coup attempt resulted in the KGB itself getting into business to make its own money and most commonly is one of the primary players in security businesses for business (not simply extorting protection money, but also providing legit security) as well as all kinds of other enterprises and there is a strong case to be made that the KGB is the only actual true "mafia" in contemporary Russia.

Picking up a gun and killing someone to take their money or getting a small group of people together to do the same does not make one "mafia". Neither do prison tats, gold chains or a shitty attitude.

BTW... one of the main Vore v Zkone is probably still in prison in the US - Japonchik.

Thank you very much for your highly enlightening reply! I will admit that my only real contac I have had with so called Russian Mafia types was a few years ago, when a journalist friend exposed things concerning the takeover of the McCormick Distillery in Weston, Missouri by so-called "Russian Mafia" types, which investigation culminated in many prosecutions and large fines levied against the distillery for alcohol tax evasion.

I am very interested in documenting the activities of he USA based Russian crminals and your post has given me several directions in which to go.

Eastern culture is very very different from western culture. You can't just take a communist system and flip it to caplitalism and expect business culture to easily assimilate. There is alot of shit going on over there right now, and has been for some time. The class divide and the crime seem pretty out of control and that's always a bad combo. I think if anything having a strong mafia / costa nostra over there would improve things, because that's not what they have now. Organized crime can in some ways be a blessing- it keeps small bands of disorganized theives and random thugs away from your business and away from your family.
