Shouldnt we lower the retirement age?

Here are the whys i think we should lower the retirement age:

- lower unemployment rate, give the jobs to the young ones
- young ones are more energetic and productive, they could work longer hour too.
- young ones are more innovative
- lower retirement age -> more healthy -> less burden on national health care system
- get more young workers to pay for taxes in order to support the old ones' social payments
- more jobs for the young group -> more people start thier families at earlier stage -> higher birth rate -> less aging population issue

What do you guys think?

They'll work cheaper too. Michigan recently made a push for older teachers to retire, allowing more younger teachers to take the positions, and cheaper for the budget.

You logic and thinking is seriously flawed - what happens to the deficit when all these early retirees stop paying income tax and claim social security benefits.

The solution to the problem the US is facing is to increase the retirement age and trim back social security benefits

Every old person keeping a job = a job not available for a younger person.

Maybe unemployment money is less than pensions. Maybe lower wages means less taxes. What ever the reason is the real problem is;

NOT ENOUGH JOBS IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Sticking plaster, to heal a broken neck don't work.

you would need to raise income taxes big time to pay for all the benefits of the retirees.

People don't retire earlier because they can not afford it themselves, they need gov payments/pensions/medicare. Your suggestion would put the burden of caring for them on the younger generation that was working (and paying taxes).

Retirees get 50% pay, sometimes less, depending. A younger, often better qualified person in their place at much less pay is win-win.

you have 80 year olds working at Walmart and McDonalds- not because they want to tho i'm sure many want to remain active but the truth is that most older people can't afford to retire. ask the average middle aged person how much he/she's got socked away including equity in a home - not fucking much, millions in their 40's living on credit. and let's say you're 60 and you have managed to save 300K, you're getting 3% at the bank max, you'll go through your savings in 5 years, 10 if you pinch pennies and then you're broke. lots of people living well into their 80's these days.

on the other hand, we're in the midst of the greatest transfer of wealth from one generation to another as the Baby Boomers are bequeathed their parents estates. those people lucky enough to have parents hand them half a mil or more can retire.

It wouldn't work. It is simple numbers. If a person retires and all they get is Social Security they are going to get around $1300 per month (I believe it is a little different for everyone and can depend on where you live etc, but we will use this number for my example). They are also going to get medicare and a medicare supplement insurance plan. So assume that medicare costs the government $500 per month per person (I'm just guessing here) of which about $100 of it will come out of the social security check. If you are in good health then you are only costing the government around $1700 per month. But if you need $400 per month worth of medicine and go to the doctor 3-4 times per year now you are costs upwards of $2200 or more per month.

Now say 10 million people retire and 10 million people take the jobs they were doing. If those new workers make the average US wage of $16 per hour that means they will only pay in (with employer contributions) about $4900 per year to social security. This means that we could easily see an uncovered cost of $25K per person that retired. Times that by 10 million and you have a 250 billion dollar a year shortcoming.

The retirement age has been raised and it will be raised again.

the government being as corrupt as it is has bankrupted social security. they keep raising it hoping people die before even retiring so they never have to pay out anything.

First thing we should experiment with is lowering the mandatory retirement age for any elected office to 70 years old.

When social security was first established the average person lived for 18 months after retirement and the retirement age was 65. For some people in a certain age bracket the retirement age is now 67 but the average person lives well into their 70's...so at some point it will be raised again.

It would be great to retire younger and have enough social security money to live on. But depending on what you put into the system will determine how much you will get. People I know who work well into their 60's can't afford health care costs so they have no choice but to keep their jobs.

People in there 50's are still taking classes in college to better their careers...

You would have to train the youth of America to get off their lazy asses. Is not ever going to happen.

funny how little many people understand of the concept of wealth and how it is created. having more people working creates more wealth, mandatory retirement ages are becoming a thing of the past

exactly, more and more we will be seeing people starting new careers in their 50's and 60's

pensions as we know it may not be around when we need them in the future, it is going to be more and more common for people to be working until they die... ie. no actual retirement

There aren't enough jobs for everyone.
