part of the problem is people pick and choose when they want the laws to apply to children. A child is not expected to be able to make the proper decisions, that is why they are considered children. This girl is not allowed to drink because she is not able to properly make that decision, but she is expected to follow the law like an adult, can't vote , but old enough to be tased.

When you make laws that don't take individual circumstances into play this is what happens. There was no reason to tase her, the only thing she had done wrong was make improper decisions with regards to the photos she was taking/sending, tasing her certainly didn't help that in any way. The cop should have simply let her run , she posed no threat to anyone, and simply show up at her school in the morning.

People that say " she shouldn't have run" are ignorant, it is a silly excuse. Cops work for us, if the majority of us think we shouldn't tase children that pose no threat for simply running away then it is as simple as that, cops should be doing what we want them to do.

Its easy to armchair quaterback anything.

Cop tells you to stop, you just stop. Otherwise you may get a taser in the head. I would guess that he didnt intend to hit her in the head but with a moving target anything can happen, he's lucky he hit her at all actually.

I've had to deal with cops a few times and when they say dont move or put my hands where they can see them, thats what I did. Guess what, I didnt get tasered or beat down.

The cop, The Chief of Police, nonetheless, knew the reason why the girl was brought to the police station in the first place. It was for lewd text messages and pictures on her cell phone. He wasn't called to a scene with reports of an armed suspect. He knew the circumstances and made an extremely poor decision.

Of course she should have stopped when he issued the command, but when she didn't comply, there's no reason to taze her! Her mom was sitting right there at the police station. He could have easily went back and asked the mother for her address. Let the situation cool down and then send a squad car to pick her up. She had to go home eventually. Therefore this cop is a fucking idiot and really needs criminal charges filed against him.

But then again, I don't want to see him get into trouble because the hillbilly piece of shit mother with the fucked up grill should have disciplined her OWN DAUGHTER! Since she didn't, she's probably going to sue and cost the tax payers money for her little windfall. I understand parents taking their kids to the cops if they're addicted and abusing drugs, but for dirty text messages?!?! Give me a fucking break! The parent should be blamed for being a shitty parent and trying to use the police as a family mediator. I guess it's cheaper than therapy...right?

TASER is not "one step down" from lethal force, it's just non-lethal force. Hell, some departments allow use of TASER when a subject shows passive resistance and that level of resistance only requires that a subject refuse to obey a lawful command.

Other departments require active resistance which is when a subject braces, tenses or pulls from a law enforcement officer.

If the Chief's dept policy states passive resistance is the minimum level of resistance for TASER then he's okay.

The federal gov sets the standard for TASER use and individual states and also departments can further restrict it to active resistance from passive.

I have a 17 year old daughter and trust me, I've wanted to tase her ass more than once...daily. If I did and was reported, I would be in jail. If I did that much damage to her, I would be in prison. I could imagine explaining that one to the judge. "Well your honor, I told her to stop and she disobeyed my direct command. So I tased her ass!" Shouldn't a parent have as much control over their 14 year old child than a police officer? If so, why aren't we allowed to tase them?

no you don't because thats their job! this isn't a volunteer service. i will say there some good cops out there who care and go above and beyond however the ones who abuse their power and people overshadow that and yet the good cops "stick together" with the asshats who make them look like shit.

video phones and digital cameras have been a great tool in showing how often this really happens. it was so much easier to get away with before, now any random person can start recording. here in ottawa there was an incident that wasn't even known until someone uploaded it youtube. a cop repeatedly punching a person who was just standing there in the face. there have been a number of cases against cops here recently.
