I lived out in L.A for nearly 10 years and only experienced one earthquake. Barely felt the fucking thing too. Experienced the same paranoia shit when I moved out to Florida - except people were blabbing about hurricanes instead of earthquakes. Sure, we get hurricanes - but it's not that bad and we very seldomly get the major ones.

I mean, anything is possible as far as the "big one" - but they have been saying this for decades. Who knows? Better to not live life in fear.

You have a dick tucked under your skirt, what do you know!

Just kidding, yeah, it's only a matter of time. Then again, anything can happen at any given time.

A super volcano can erupt in yellow stone park.

Sun flares could hit tomorrow and cause major destruction.

We could all of a sudden get hit with huge super storms due to magnetic pole instability.

Hit by an asteroid, whatever. No need to scare the shit out of people, it's apart of life and out of our control.

An insignificant date that's been blown way out of proportion, just like December 31st, 1999.

The Mayan's were astrologers, nothing more, nothing less. December 21, 2012 was just marked as the end of an era and the beginning of a new one.

Nowhere, anywhere, did they say it was the end of the world nor is there any factual scientific evidence anywhere showing any significance to that date.

Isn't California still bankrupt? Who is going to rebuild the state if it gets destroyed by an earth quake?

Don't you dare getting an earth quake there! It would probably ruin the food and gas prices for us Europeans even more!

Yes, happens every 250 000 years give or take a million depending on the given volcanologists interpretation of time (the earth spun faster back then so carbon dating is ABSOLUTELY flawed)... don't hold your breath

This happens a number of times during a given year, depending on the suns 11 year cycle, it is in a higher phase now so we get hit by them every month or so. A 'big one' does about a centimeters worth of damage to our magnetic field which goes back to normal soon after, so unless we are talking electronics? We'll be fine..

There is evidence the poles are already shifting, however they wont reach the other side for about 3000 years at its current pace... feel anything yet? Me neither...

We are hit all the time, one landed in the Nairobi desert in 2008... we were fine.. The big ones that could cause a problem aren't on trajectory to hit us in the next 100 years so we are fine. A mid sized one can do significant damage still but they are currently working on marking every single one, they spot 3000 in a given night... not bad huh?

The last big one here in LA was in January 1994--the Northridge quake. We get little quakes all the time. I think San Francisco is more seismically active than LA anyhow.

Can you imagine what it would be like to be stuck in LA right after a major catastrophe and having 10 million douchetards and entitled "gubment check" types desperately looking for food and fuel? ( I said only 10 million because there are a few million awesome people of course.) I am glad to have my family out of there even though I miss my friends dearly.

While I agree with your thesis of needing to not live life in constant fear of the unstoppable, I must correct you with regard to the Mayans. Their accomplishments in mathematics (aside from astrological calculations), art, and architecture (just to name a few) are regarded as highly advanced and elegant for their time.

I have been to Tikal and stood atop their pyramids there, which was an amazing and humbling experience to behold, seeing an entire complex of pyramids rising up above the rain forest canopy.

I've also been to Xunantunich in Belize, Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave, and assorted other sites of archeological/cultural significance in Belize and Guatemala. The Maya were, and ARE, a truly amazing people. It's unfortunate that many think they disappeared and/or only made a noteworthy contribution to our civilization in the form of alleged doomsday predictions (again, a misconception; one which you accurately noted).

I have friends there who are of direct Maya descent and speak the language as well also.

I love that on CNN, to watch the Tsunami warning video, I have to watch an ad for Dawn dishwashing soap first.

Actually, the Calcedonia (sp) fault line is ready for another good tremor. Every ~60 years a good 7 - 8 quake goes off, and every ~300 years a large ~9+ quake goes off. That area is due for both at the moment.

Not saying it's going to happen, but geological data says the fault line is due for a good shake.

Ancient Mayan's were indeed a very advanced civilization for their time. I miss-worded my post, I meant that the calenders they created were cyclical and only related to their superior understanding of mathematics and astrology. I didn't mean to infer that's all they excelled at. I think it's awesome you've been to Tikal, something I would love to do.

Here is some interesting in-depth reading on how their calenders work for those of you interested.
