use the backup database option in wordpress its self and then just manually download all the files off your server to your computer

try wp time machine, it will let you back up your sites to dropbox, so you can sync it to your desktops, mobile phones, etc.

i myself use backupbuddy (paid plugin)

cPanel backup

if your host doesn't have cPanel - move to Naked Hosting / Certified Hosting

If you have cpanel or directadmin, you can just backup the databases and all files from the admin.

of course you could. Tell them you'd like a full backup that you can download and keep on your external hard drive.

Do you want to backup once to move to a knew host or do you want to do consistent hourly, daily, weekly or monthly backups?

If you just want to move your sites over. It is easy to do the export to XML, move the wp-content folder, and do a database backup from phpmyadmin.

If you are looking to do consistent backups then a free/paid plugin would be the way to go. You can usually backup to your computer as well as to an offsite storage account.
