hey, y'all know it's worse than ever at that nucular plant right?

"The situation today at the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant is still very grave and serious. We must remain vigilant," Kan said. "We are not in a position where we can be optimistic. We must treat every development with the utmost care."

This is terrible.

It won't be an asteroid that kills us off. It won't be a plague. It will be man made. This is only the beginning of the end.

At least the punishment will fit the crime.

Wow. That's the best explanation of a nuclear reactor leak aimed at school children that I've ever seen. It explains the cooling process and the fallout and everything.

think about that

It's kind of ironic because the film was heavily criticized for being unrealistic but the whole thing in Japan reminds me of it quite a bit in many ways:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_Twister

You would think that someone would have considered that a disaster of some sort could strike and that it may be difficult or impossible to get power for some time and that the generators could be unusable for whatever reason.

Maybe they should just start dumping loads of concrete and encase everything in a giant rock like Chernobyl.

hmmm...yes lets build a nuke on the coast in the ring of fire designed to withstand a 7.1 earthquake, never mind the tsunami...

an extremely idiotic decision for which the local people are paying for with their lives, and their children and their children's children etc etc etc...

consider that already 100 miles away from the plant food being grown is now heavily contaminated with unsafe levels of radiation.

100 miles away

why the hell Japan with 127 million people they would even use nukes is stunning considering they are surrounded by water. wave power, tide power, wind power, geo thermal, hydroelectric possibly...

this incident has just reminded what a bad idea nukes are in the first place.
1)they are extremely expensive to build
2)while accidents are few and far between, a bad accident is really fucking bad.
3)the u.s. is already at the emergency point for the storage of highly radioactive waste, and world wide this shit is going to lead to some major problems cuz other countries aren't even as diligent as the u.s. as far as nuke ops and waste disposal.

Hydro power kills more people every year, broken dams have killed hundreds of thousands at a time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banqiao_Dam

"approximately 26,000 people died from flooding and another 145,000 died during subsequent epidemics and famine."

Water doesn't scare anyone, but maybe it should. It was the Tsunami that killed people in Japan, not the ATOMS

I had a CTA today (CT Angiography) resolution enhanced with Iodine.
More likely that I will "glow in the dark" from that than from the radiation fallout that will reach me from Japan.

Still, the Japanese are totally screwed ? their food and water supply has becone dangerously irradiated I have read.

actually the link between earthquakes and tsunamis is relatively new, i believe it was the indonesian one that they discovered this.

without nuclear power there is no internet, so lets not throw something away we all benefit from just yet shall we?
