Question for those of you with a water softener - GoFuckYourself.com

I've been in this house a little over two years now and have never put any salt in. When I open it, it's all solid and hard as a rock. When we had the water turbidity tested, they added some kind of acid purifier and said everything was fine after that.

I have a feeling it's not "fine."

How often do you have to put the bags of salt in them?

I had one where I used to live. I think I added salt every 3-4 weeks. Maybe half a bag or so.

I used to live in a house with one, but I didn't have to take care of that.

I do think I remember the adding of salt was a pretty regular thing; maybe 3 to 4 weeks like above.

We could tell when it needed it though. You'd get out of the shower and not feel clean.

Have it serviced there is something wrong with it. The salt goes in granulated and should basically be a brine solution.

Interested in any real info on this... the house I just bought has one and I've never personally dealt with it. I know my parents house when I was in high school had one that was the size of a fridge and there was a guy that came every so often to dump like 4 bags of salt in it... the one I have is maybe the size of a keg.

Yeah dude you actually have to add salt, we had them in a house as a kid. Salt is needed.

Yeah, definitely not even close to being a brine solution. Hmm. Wonder if I could break it up inside. I'll try that tomorrow and see what it does or looks like below there. Well water seems to be a huge pain considering we're going to need a new well pump soon.

There are chemicals that could break it up but they are generally very caustic.

A physical clean out and once over combined with the addition of salts if you can determine that the unit is functional should set you straight.

There is a valve that opens and closes on a signal from the timer unit. If the brine tank is bone dry,there is something up with the valve motor.Either the motor is bad or the timer isn't set up correctly.

I stick a bag or two in and check on it weekly. after a week or two it starts getting low and I have to run to the store and grab another bag. Its pretty much dump it and check back to make sure it hasn't run out, rinse and repeat.
