Thanks, I sent this to everyone of my sheepish relatives who laugh at me behind my back every time I warn them about something. They don't think anything is legit unless someone on the TV gives them the info.

i don´t get why people post pics of their kids online anyway?
and the worse part is that they don´t take action and make them private, insane!

Because they are fucking retards.

I hate the whole social "let's take a fucking pic of everything and post it on Facebook".

The internet was more fun before all this bullshit!!

how does this endanger you or your kids exactly? if a guy walks in your neighbourhood and see's your child he can probably figure out all that stuff on his own, how does an iphone make this more of a threat?

did you plan leaving your children unsupervised at any point? Will your daycare allow a stranger to pick up your child? I would hope not.. so where is the threat again?

Posting on the internet gives the info to a larger crowd.
The larger the crowd the more likely a creep in present.

Not every neighborhood has a pedo murderer, but every internet connection is
broad enough to eventually lead to one.

That's a pretty sensationalist news story, is that the usual kind of crap they produce? Sure, I'd hate to think that someone who was virtually stalking my daughter may also be able to locate her, but the chances of it actually happening are pretty damn slim. Just like being the victim of a suicide bomber.

The location issue goes much further though. I have several friends on FB who have a "Home" location configured... yeah, you've just announced you're home, but you've also announced WHERE it is. These are the people with 300 online friends but only really know 10% of them. Would you give your home address to an acquaintance?

yeah scarier than this issue is do a quick registered sex offender search in your neighborhood.... while the internet can be scary, really the creeps are all over.

I really have to wonder who doesn't know about geotagging. You'd really have to live life under a fucking rock to not know that unless you strip off EXIF data manually, or use the "save for Web" function in Photoshop... The fucking EXIF data is still on the photo.

Who the fuck doesn't know this????

All you need to do is read the feature list when the phone OS was released and it says "Now supports geotagging!" Duh!

I swear the world is getting more and more retarded as time passes by.

Even with gps off telecoms or anyone with access to the telecom systems can always see your location, you can also use gps without having a gps antenna as long as the gps get the location from the telecom.

Your phone connects to multiple transmitters and using the signal strength they can locate your location since they can always see what towers your phone connects to for reception...

I'm surprised about all this fuzz about this, there is really nothing new to this other than now people is starting to post their location to everyone... some laptops have gps build into them as well

Cell tower triangulation is inaccurate as it gets. Turn your GPS off, and load Google Maps... and it'll likely say you're about a mile from where you actually are. Sometimes you won't even be within the circle it draws.

My phone get's my location no problem with GPS turned off. My tablet does too, and I don't believe that it even has a GPS module. Android OS on Sprint/Time Warner networks.

Get real man. Most people buy shit and just turn it on without ever reading the manual.

I bet you can't even name 3 parts under the hood of your car that you can replace
yourself, yet you are blasting people about not knowing the inner software of
a phone.

For most people with normal lives, knowing how to keep their car running is critical and
knowing that their phone has a GPS location in a photograph would be trivial information.

Is there any site you can just upload a picture to and it will decode the GPS exif data? I have some from a Blackberry with location info in the metadata but it is just gibberish to me.

Could be done via wifi. Google maps out access point SSIDs when they do streetview capturing. When trying to figure out location, your device phones home with a list of the SSIDs it can see, and Google matches against its database. The results can be surprisingly accurate, since access point signals cannot travel very far.

I always chuckled when paysite/program owners would complain about their members knowing their 'new set' was actually really old if they forgot to strip the exif,.

What was that one site a year or 2 ago that would compile data from facebook, twitter, foursquare, etc and say "Rob me!"? They did it to make a point, but it was pretty cool.

Parts off the top of my head that I have personally changed... fan belt, carburetor, gas pedal cable, radiator with upper and lower hoses, brakes, changed out the rear bonnet on my '74 Super Beetle, replaced the left front fender too. Oh and of course I've changed out the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor, distributor cap & rotor, fuel filter, air filter, and all that shit...

Anyway, geotagging is not a piece of trivial information. It's a very mainstream function of phones and photography. The function glares you in the face every time you open up the Properties of photos taken by Blackberry phones, and it's under the General Location Settings of the iPhone... it's not hidden. There is nothing underhanded going on by the manufacturers.

This is why I don't have an Android phone, I access most non-logged-in Google services via TOR (anonymising proxy service), and I regularly clear my browser of google and youtube cookies.

i choose not to live in fear of my neighbours. There are more good people out there than bad. All it takes is one? Bring it on.. i live in a community that will protect me and my own when in need, and I will do the same for them.

Where do you live?

Who the fuck doesn't know this????

All you need to do is read the feature list when the phone OS was released and it says "Now supports geotagging!" Duh!

I swear the world is getting more and more retarded as time passes by.
I supposed they were talking about geolocation that is now part of some browsers.
But first you have to grant the website that wants to use geolocation to locate exactly where you are, permission.

So in this case, I really don't see the problem. Just don't give permission.
This youtube video is somewhat sensational and doesn't explain how this problem arises.
The solution is never make any picture with your smartphone and never post it online ?

The problemlooks for sure posting a picture online with geotagging.

Now I am going to read first about EXIF-data. Thanks.
