OMG big sites going down - Turning point of internet

just got it.,

Quote:
On Jan. 18th there is going to be an all-out strike on the internet. Websites across the internet are going dark in protest of the internet censorship bills in Congress, SOPA and PIPA.

Some of the biggest sites in the world are participating: Reddit, Mozilla. And some others may join (e.g. a leading micro-blogging platform and a popular collaboratively-written encyclopedia), but they need a nudge. If we can get them to join this will be EPIC.

Ask the biggest sites on the internet to join the strike. Click here.

If you're on Facebook or Twitter, please use these links to share this:

Thank You!

Does the average internet user have any idea what SOPA is or that any of this is even going on?

please hit yourself on the head if you think sites will have "this page cannot be found" . They will have some text explaining the dangers of SOPA thus teaching the end users. They are not just going to turn their servers off haha.

You also think wikipedia cares about it's competitors?

Interestingly, it seems like a ton of people know about SOPA. I see people talking about it on Facebook that I'd never imagine would know anything about it.

And shutting down a few sites - even if they are Facebook and Google - will mean nothing. Everybody will say, "Ooh! That sucked!" and a day later, it won't suck for them anymore.

You could turn off the entire internet for one day and it won't make any difference. Who really cares? This thing that we're all connected to is pretty much useless.

This movement will really take up steam if Google/Youtube does this. The rest are all small players in the big scheme of things.

SOPA Author to Remove ISP Blocking Provision

http://www.pcworld.com/businesscente...provision.html

[T]he lead sponsor of the U.S. Stop Online Piracy Act, a controversial copyright enforcement bill, will remove a much-debated provision that would require Internet service providers to block their subscribers from accessing foreign websites accused of infringing the copyrights of U.S. companies. ...

... Meanwhile, a group of six Senate Republicans called on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, to delay votes on PIPA scheduled to start Jan. 24. Since the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved PIPA in May, "we have increasingly heard from a large number of constituents and other stakeholders with vocal concerns about possible unintended consequences of the proposed legislation," wrote the Republicans, all members of the committee. ...

congress doesnt give a shit what the people think except for 1 day every 2 - 6 years. The people are lemmings who are lied to, gerrymandered into predictable pools, & otherwise ignored.

Every other day, congress listens to the hi rollers at their fundraisers. Facebook et al is generating public outcry because they can't compete with the hollywood lobbyists.

Who wins this battle will show who congress listens to.

there are congressmen who have changed their position and some that have not. the ones who have changed is due to public pressure. i know it's easy to be jaded but sometimes public pressure works.

No, I was talking to a few tech heads at a bar in San Diego and they heard about it, but didn't care. I was trying to explain to them about the bill and they didn't even know the full depth. I'm surprised the media is not in on this. Maybe this will wake them up and get some coverage. If some housewife found out that she couldn't post up her baby photos on Facebook she might join the cause.

its my opinion that the social media sites oppose this because they will have to police their sites for copyright in a much more significant way. & doing so will cost them big money, & concurrent loss of profit. I dont see anything altruistic in their intentions, given they don't give a flying fuck about copyright until they get a DMCA.

i know players like the EFF, & the inventors of the internet, dont have money as an angle. i have difficulty with arguments about the abuse of the law, all of the fears about censorship & ending the free web is speculation to me, sort of like stating traffic laws prevent the free flow of traffic.

the law seems to be responding to pressure however, since hollywood wanted this attached to some end-of-year business with no debate.

i know there are other opponents, who think freedom will die on the web. I'm just not convinced this is the case. The law requires an act of the attorney general to initiate a closing.

Its very difficult to get the AG to do things. This is a key reason porn continues to be free in the face of efforts from republicans. AG has limited resources, higher priorities.

Its hard to forecast, should this law pass in any form, how many resources the DOJ would put behind its enforcement. The executive can completely ignore a law if it chooses to.

My own thinking is that the law will mainly benefit only the biggest entertainment companies. Small fish like me wont have the money to make the AG work on my behalf to shut down anything.

right it like we have a proven record of a judge rubber stamping a fundamentally flawed takedown.

What ever we say, these laws are coming. So make your future business plans based on a law like or is SOPA. Because we can clap, moan or gripe until we're blue in the face. The law will pass and we will have to adapt.

So GG and PJ. Tell us how you're adapting for the future.

If you have no plans to adapt. You're lying about the devastating effect this wil have on you and the online industry. Or stupid and shouldn't be in business.

I use the words "in business" very loosely. LOL
