regarding SOPA & apple computer

all the SOPA threads are great reads, & i think both sides have merit, kinda like abortion.

regardless if SOPA passes, & especially if it fails, or passes with no teeth...i think apple computer is laying the groundwork for the next generation of internet security infrastructure.

Speaking in glittering generalities, apple controls the ability (or inability) to manage what you run on your phone/PC. examples - apps only work with apple approval, & apple can wipe out programs on your phone at their whim. songs downloaded from itunes cannot play on non-apple hardware. you have to register what computers you use to interface itunes.

they have recently released icloud. You no longer have to download media & bring it with you. It won't be long until you cant download anything at all. You will only be able to collect your songs/movies/shows on icloud.

Apple is also dabbling in search. Talk about controlling what sites their users can see in Apples version of the internet! They will have complete control of what their users can access. They will have the power to block any sites they want, much like disney completely controls the user experience at their theme parks.

If apple pulls this off, it wont be long where google, ISPs & hardware companies work to emulate apples closed-internet infrastructure.

Either way, the war on piracy will go on. & The pirates will never completely die, just like drug lords, terrorists will never die. But they can & will be marginalized, SOPA or no SOPA.

Yep...

oh & by the way, the same tech that can ghettoize pirates will also likely ghettoize porn. It's well known how jobs was a radical pro-family/anti-porn psycho.

yeah. but if apple didn't grossly overprice its products, this number would be higher.

Unless Microsoft and Android do it, it will not have a great impact.

the thing if they block too much people won't like it at all. but yes however agree in some ways as it is not well known how people can take music off their ipod to put on other devices.

It will be interesting.

true. i'm afraid they will if apple turns their infrastructure into a major cash cow. Its troubling to me that apple has become a trendsetter in tech. their culture is somewhat communist. nothing but black turtlenecks?

They are already one of the biggest companies in the world doing things exactly how they do them now. If they wanted to gain a larger share of the market they would have to lower their prices so that they can compete with the glutton of other companies selling computers/mp3 players at lower prices and the odds are even if they increased their sales they would actually make less money.

The motivation for them to do that is not very big and they would stand to lose far more than they gain. By expanding their market share they would lose that "cool" or "hip" thing that they have now which is one of their major selling points and it is why many people spend the extra money on their products. They would be just another face in the crowd.

They are trendsetters, but their corporate mentality is not unique to them, it is just more widely known with them than other companies.

I would think we would have far more to worry about from either people like the .xxx idiots or lawmakers in general trying censor/control porn online than we do from Apple.

my idea is not how apple executes its business model. rather, MSFT & GOOG begin to behave more & more like AAPL in the way they create a total media experience for the consumer.

One can see how apple innovated the smartphone sector. Once they get into the TV sector, & tie all the hardware & software into a single cloud experience, they will have a high level of control over how their customers manage their media. Shit, luxury cars are now sold with ipod docks. Soon it will just be an icloud connection to an apple satellite.

Cloud systems suck, I bought a movie on Amazon, same price they were selling the dvd for. I thought I could download it, then play on my xbox or add to my tablet. Little did I know it's on their cloud system and I can only stream it through a device.

I will never buy another movie from Amazon.

I could see how that could be a worry. A situation where we end up with just a few companies controlling the internet or mobile phone service or cable TV etc can be bad news because, like you say, if they all one day decide to block access to something or control access to certain things it could be a very ugly situation.

I would like to think that a company like Google sees how many sex/porn searches are done every day and realize that this is a product that their customers want and are using their site to find so they won't deny those customers access to it for fear of losing them. But I guess you can never be 100% certain.

I still feel that it is more likely that a law would get passed that could limit access to porn than large companies controlling the market choosing voluntarily to block access to it.
