Unmanaged Servers - who's got them?

I'm looking ....again.... for an unmanaged server. My current host decided they needed to switch to "fully owned" IP addresses and nothing but problems now.

Any good deals on unmanaged servers out there? I actually need 2.... 1 for mainstream and 1 for adult.

Quick servers... opposite of slow... please. 4 gb or 8gb ram would be nice.

Mainstream server does not need much storage space... 200 gb is fine.

Adult server 1 or 2 tb would be ideal.

Can you give me some reasons why they are so good?

I talked with a sales guy and I didn't really like what he had to say.

nice price. Solid network, no issue whatsoever. It gets upgraded all the time to keep up with demand. Support is good, I had an issue last week (that I caused) and they had a free IPKVM up for me within an hour.

I've been with them for about 14 months now, and I've had maybe 5 minutes of downtime, if that. No downtime at all since the network upgrades.

I've hosted at Pair, The Planet, FDCServers, ServerPronto, and a few other places. I'm happiest with SecuredServers by far.

I got a decent quote and mentioned that I would like them to migrate my sites... sales guy continued to forward some 3rd party programmers to do that at my dime.

Really? They have a potential client and tell me they won't help with the server transfer? So many issues come up with a server transfer and if the sales guy tells me they won't help and to hire somebody else... doesn't sit well.

I have a programmer that can take care of issues... they can't even offer to help me make this transition smooth

You asked for a unmanaged server.. and then asked the host to move you? Thats a managed solution.

No, its not. Its asking to make sure the transfer goes smooth and many, many things are in the hands of the host. To not offer this help at the start tells me no help will ever happen, and believe it or not, many issues are only controlled by the host.

What happens when my rDNS is screwed up on new site, is support going to tell me I have to contact a 3rd party?

How many times have u switched servers?

Moving sites to a new server is definitely a managed function. I have always used unmanaged servers, I've moved and upgraded servers a lot. Never once has a host helped me move sites, and frankly I wouldn't want them to.

Unmanaged means you get a running server, with ip addresses and network access. The rest is up to you: site moving, mysql, web server, email setup, etc etc etc.

regarding rdns: SecuredServers will handle your reverse DNS just fine.

Every time I move my sites my emails are all screwed. It is 2 reasons:

new IP addresses are fucked
host fucked up the rdns

Why do you move hosts so many times? I am moving because my current host took a perfectly good set up and requested IP changes because they purchased new IP space. Problem is... what they purchased... is making my email ability non-existant.

I'm so fucking pissed right now I can't even explain in words... a majority of my money comes from newsletters I send out and right now... I can't send them because half of the email hosts are blocking my new IP

Moved from one host because their ip space kept getting blacklisted, moved from another because they jacked the price, moved from a third for network issues, moved from a fourth because the support absolutely sucked, moved from another because they told me I couldn't run an irc client (not an irc server). This from around 1998 until now, it's not like I change hosts all that much. Some of it is upgrading to a better server at the same host, and having to move stuff over then.

If you have problems moving, I'd suggest leaving the old host up for an extra month and slowly transition stuff over. Set your DNS TTL short during the move. If you're having any sort of downtime, you're doing it wrong. I moved a server on 2 days notice and didn't have any problems whatsoever.

Are you running SPF? DKIM? That can help you not get blacklisted.

rDNS at SecuredServers is rock solid, once it's set it's set. Never had an issue with it, and I rely on rDNS a lot.

I love their service. Hardly any downtime, and the support staff tackles issues very quickly whenever they do arise(usually my fault, admittedly.. ha).

seriously, unmanaged means the host provides you with hardware, an operating system, power, network, and ips. That's it.

You are missing my point...

There are so many problems that "may" arise from a server transfer. It is imperitive they "the host" are addressing the issues as they arise.

Well, in my experience SecuredServers has been good at handling anything that's come up. Anything specific you're concerned about?

So I spoke with some other guys in the company. They assured me the transfer would go smooth and no IP's would be blacklisted.

So I got 2 boxes from them, transferring now. Pretty good prices, hope all goes well.

Did you recently have to switch IP's?

Was your email and/or sites messed up as a result of that IP change? Are your sites now on a UK IP address? How are your emails working?
