I haven't shot anyone. Do I need that kind of firepower? I dunno. I HAVE been threatened more than once.

I have been threatened too. So rather than hiding away in my closet with a bunch of rifles like a scared little faggot, I gave $250 to a junkie piece of shit to pour 5 liters of gas through the letterbox of the guy who did it, then throw in a match. Neither of them walked away unscathed, but then again I don't go around handing out business cards with my home address and phone number, so I guess it's all good.

That said, I don't have anything against guns at all. It's just fortunate that you have 10 pairs of hands to handle those 20 weapons, so more power to you.

As with any meme, its longevity depends on either its ability to answer the questions and peoples will/determination to believe in it or both (as with religion). There is always an answer, hence its enduring success. You can't really pose any questions that haven't been answered already in a multitude of ways, to THEIR satisfaction.

Besides, when people get caught up and cornered in the new testament and love and peace, they simply revert back to the old testament and eye for an eye.

That said, anyone that feels the need to walk around town with a pistol, just because they can, is a sick and extremely individual.

My point is that, in order to understand what the passage you're referring to actually means, you should study it. And learn the context surrounding it. What was happening when that was said? To whom was it spoken?

The same Jesus who tells us to turn the other cheek also said, "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword."

What did He mean then? Do you know? I doubt it.

My point is that you probably shouldn't use examples you don't fully understand.

Get more assault rifles, most of those are bolt and lever actions. Obsolete in today's standards.

don't patronize me. i probably have studied the bible and religious and christian history more than you.

why avoid the question? when jesus instructs his followers to turn the cheek and strike back against evil doers and aggressors why do you disobey him and plan to shoot your enemies?

simple question.

My answer was not patronizing. I study the Bible almost daily. I've got a library of more than 19,000 books that are all written about the Bible, context, culture, what the passages meant to the original writers and readers, etc.

This passage about turning the other cheek is quite deep. Jesus was engaged in a discussion on the Law of Retaliation (eye for an eye). If you really study as much as you say, study this passage and answer for yourself.

Where do you store 19,000 books in what is very obviously an apartment based on that photo?

Do you even know how big of a collection of 19,000 books is? Many town libraries are smaller.

You really shouldn't have forced me to make you look stupid. Oh well... your choice.

It becomes obvious what was meant here when you actually study the text, rather than just claiming to do so.

You'll notice later, when Jesus himself was struck in the face, He didn't "turn the other cheek" (go read the 18th chapter of John). So was he meaning this passage you quote literally? Of course not. He was in a long discussion with Pharisees, turning much of what they believed on its head. Notice how things are worded in that 5th chapter of Matthew that you quoted: "You've heard it said... But I say to you..." This type of language would have been familiar to the listener. It signaled a new way of understanding old traditions. A "binding and loosing" of understanding. It is strong language, strongly worded to show authority. Jesus was demonstrating that he was a new Rabbi teaching new things never before heard. It grabbed the attention of the listener and angered many of them.

You can't just separate that one sentence from the speech being given. In that same speech, Jesus told the Pharisees to love your enemies, to give someone more than they sue you for, to not just walk a mile in another's shoes but two miles. Etc. Etc.

Shall I go on?

The dwelling in the picture is not an apartment, but a house in a decent neighborhood. Alas, it was not my house. Those guns were scattered on the floor of my best friend's house after our day at the range on Easter Sunday.

I reside in a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house as well. It's also in a pretty decent neighborhood, although not fancy by any means.

You are missing something else, though... but instead of calling you an idiot I'll be kind. I haven't purchased a printed book in a very long time. I buy from Apple's iBooks, and if what I want isn't available from Apple I then check for a Kindle or Nook version. There's this new technology commonly referred to as eBooks. Maybe you've heard of it.

I do indeed have the amount of books mentioned. In electronic format. That way I can refer to them from my iPad, iPhone or iMac, whatever is handy.

I didn't complete this thought. I make this mistake of assuming others can reach logical conclusions on their own. I forget not everyone studies and reads about this as much as I do.

Here is the conclusion of the matter: the Pharisees were intent on following "laws". Jesus was making the law even stricter for them than it had ever been before, in many areas. He was saying, "It's not good enough for you to just follow the laws as you've been doing, you've got to also do X, Y and Z..." He was giving them a hard time in order to prove that their "righteousness" was worthless.

The point was this: it's impossible for a mere human to be good enough for God, which is why we need HIM (Jesus) as our substitute. Our imperfection is to be substituted for His perfection. Our imperfect lives replaced by His perfect life. We could try all we want to "earn" our way to God, but when we found that to be impossible, we needed to accept God's "charity", called GRACE. When we are done trying to be perfect, we need to lay down the ego and realize it's impossible to do so and we need someone to pay our debts for us... and that is why He (Jesus) came.

Make sense?

Is this a gun thread or a religious thread? I liked the gun thread better. By the way, fuck god, fuck religion and fuck jesus. Based on history we all need guns to protect us from the fucking religions out there that are responsible for killing more innocent people over the past thousand years than any disease or war.

Wrong. List the approximate deaths you think religion has brought to the world. Include the Inquisition and the Crusades. I'll come back and correct your errors. I think you'll be very surprised at what really kills people. Hint: car accidents in the US alone kill more. And atheist regimes kill MILLIONS more.

Oh well, there you have it. I never really thought about the obvious fact that murdering people for not believing the same thing you do is exactly the same as a car accident.

I guess murdering for Jesus really is ok.

Sorry Donny, but i really thought you wanted to talk about religion. How many people did Jesus say was OK to murder in his name? You seem to have a handle on the stats, so i'll defer to you for a concrete number.

drop the condensation. i have studied religion and religious history at university levels, not at the joke christian university you went to, so spare me.

so answer me. why to do continue to disobey your lord and plan on shooting your aggressors?

at least be honest and say you are a flawed human being and is trying to live up to those standards, however weakly, not try and confuse me with some junior level theology debate.

Do you even know how big of a collection of 19,000 books is? Many town libraries are smaller.

I can get 3,500 on a kindle, so I guess he would have 6 kindles

I don't just randomly accept whatever is placed in front of me. I like to color outside the lines. Some of my favorite courses were created by the likes of Elaine Pagels from Princeton University. I don't blame your assumption, however, because far too many Christians only ingest what is given to them by their particular university. Not me. I question everything.

Feel better?

None of this invalidates the info I last shared with you. The passage you mention was indeed directed at people who placed the law above God's grace.
