Smart Meters Track RDIF Chips

http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/rnr/2999590776.html

I guy from the power company tried to install one of those meters on my home, I told him I needed 24 hours notice before he could cut the power to change meters. He never came back

SCE allows you to opt out, but they'll charge you $75 up front and $10 a month to keep your analog. Mine was supposed to be installed the first week of April and they still haven't come around. I've been getting robo-calls for the past two weeks, and still nothing. Bill will most likely go down, and every other company sells my shit anyway, so I don't care.

The new meters don't charge less, they are set up to charge different price at different times of the day. They charge more at peek times and normal rate at other times.

For exactly the reason you stated. Although my computer is generally running 18 + hours a day, my peak usage throughout the entire house isn't in the middle of the day when it's most expensive. Peak usage at my house is really early morning and late evening. But who knows? Some of the local websites I visit, where people have already had theirs installed, it seems the majority are experiencing lower bills. I'll re-post once/if I actually get it.

I had a smart meter installed and my measured usage (actual kWh usage, not $ amounts) went down 20%. Does that mean I've been overcharged all these years I had my analog meter?

No it means you are being undercharged now and the electric companies will need a bailout in the next 5 years or have drastic rate hikes.

Already happening in my area. Rates have doubled in the past decade and there's predictions that they could quadruple in the next.

I have many friends that had the new meters installed with different results. Some bills went up by 30% some down 10% all with the same usage.

My friend with the bill that went up 30% called and complained but the power company said the meter was fine without even coming out to check. My friend then took a self made electric device that gives off a strong magnetic field and put it on the meter a turned it on. The meter LCD went blank and we could smell burnt electronics.

A week later someone from the power company came by and changed out the meter, now the bill is what it was with the original meter.

Is it transmitting on the 900 Mhz frequency ? As far as I know the 900 Mhz frequency is an unregulated frequency, so the power company transmit information about your power usage and devices into an open/unregulated wireless frequency ? That's awesome !

This guy is a fool. Smart meters don't read the rfid tags in things you buy. It amazes me how progress is hindered by stupidity. Smart meters do all kinds of great things such as offer faster power outage detection & reporting, gives people more control over power consumption in cities where rates change based on the time of day, lets people optimize power consumption to reduce their bills, and in California will be used as a part of the Smart Grid, a more efficient method of electricity delivery.

seriously ? cmon now , you sound like a shill. How often does your power go out ? I have a smart meter for awhile , it takes them the same time to fix power outs , and that only happens once a year... sounds like a waste of millions of dollars

it was pretty damn easy to do that before , you go look at the meter, if its spinning faster , you are using more power , spinning slower, less power.. pretty easy to figure out.. the new "smart meter" doesn't show me anything that makes any sense..

The ONLY thing i have noticed "better" is i dont have to help tow the power guys truck out of my driveway every time they came to check the meter..

i would be more impressed if it was called the "super smart grid"

I had a smart meter installed (due to the fact that I'm insane...) and I got a massive rebate in January. My meter reader was WAY off and I doubt I'll have to pay for any electricity at all this year. Give or take, my Hydro bill is now -$1,600.

My electricity usage has gone from about $400 every two months to about $150. My old meter reader was, well, an idiot. He has a guaranteed job and a guaranteed pension that we Toronto taxpayers get to pay for! Doesn't matter if he actually looks at my hydro meter and has me sign the paper or not - he still gets paid.

At least he doesn't come to my house anymore - and THAT is worth a lot to me. That his job is gone and no-one will ever be hired in his place is worth even more.

Passive RFID tags, the ones used on product labels, can be read from up to about 10cm away. In other words, unless you place your groceries on top of your meter, it couldn't possibly read a tag.

Those 'smart' meters are a joke.

When I bought my new home and renovated it, they had to install a new meter. They wanted to install one of those new smart meters. I refused. My electrician advised against getting a smart meter and my second cousin who works for the power company had already told me plenty of stories about the problems those 'smart' meters cause (radio/wifi interference etc).
