Maybe bars around the window? Although that may be against fire code for the basement.

Just drill a big hole in the wall like you would with a tumble dryer.

How about a change of plans to a free standing, portable AC? Plug it in and go as far as I know.

I didn't bother putting up bars for a ground floor apartment in the west village. Your friend will probably be fine in Otawa.

Portable air conditioner still need an exhaust, which would carry the same vulnerabilities.

Ding. A screw lock so the window can't be opened any further and a couple of screws so the AC unit can't be pushed inward.

All of the other windows are made of glass, so breaking in is as simple as throwing a rock anyway. So no need for high security unless he's going to do bars or plexiglass on the other windows too.

Home security is like computer security - it's really easy to break into Windows.

Screw a piece of wood to both sides of the window frame so there is no gaps. Also place 2 pieces of wood all the way at the top of the window so you can't pull the window up.

If you bolt into the actually window they will make you pay for the entire window replacement.

If "your friend" is really worried about messing with windows etc., you can noticeably cool your place with a good DEHUMIDIFIER, closed 'room-darkening' window shades, and decent air circulation (oscillating fans/ceiling fans) ... air does not heat up if it is kept moving. If your dehumidifier is doing it's job, you will have to empty it every 5 hours or so, but that's a small price to pay for being comfortable.

For years that's all I had, and people swore I had AC when they came into my house.

The humidity is what traps the heat and makes it unbearable ... remove the humidity from your room, and keep the sun from coming in the windows, and you will really be surprised how much cooler it is - without AC!

sounds like you don't live in the best neighborhood, if you have expensive shit lieing around in clear view it will get stolen AC unit in the window or not...

with the AC unit at least you won't have to go through the trouble of cleaning up all the broken glass and go through the drama of filing police report, explaining to your landlord why they are out of few hundred bucks to replace the broken window, etc

You can get a bar around the window to keep out the tyrones. Your landlord should be able to do it for you

I have one of those portable AC units. It works good for a room and might keep a small apartment cool. You do have to put the exhaust in the window, but you can easily take it out when you are not home and shut the window.

A good fan is the Vornado fans. They "shoot" a column of air in a tight vortex, rather than traditional fans that are turbulent all around. So you can aim it and really get the air bouncing around and moving.

yeah i really doubt he has much to worry about, its not the best area but definitely not worst. being in the south end of ottawa, there is a bit of gang activity but its not like he has anything worth stealing anyways. i think he worries about people breaking in and fucking up the place more than anything since hes not there a lot of the time.

anyways, you've given me some good ideas. and no, its really not me living there though i knew everyone would think that, ha.

If he has windows it's not secure and adding an air conditioner won't change that.
