Has anyone here travelled to Turkey? Specifically, Istanbul/Cappadocia/Bodrum? Any recommendations on must see places? Great restaurants? Hotels?

Anything you did not enjoy while there?

Curious to hear some stories from others.

I was there last year, it was great! The only thing I didn't enjoy was a guy working at the hotel, he was trying to make me feel sorry for him so I would give him money.

Why not Italy/Spain/Greece/Portugal instead? Much more pleasant in terms of civilized people (muslims tend to look at you like from the other planet, especially if you are blond female)

Bodrum is great but a lot of tourists over there. But a place to be. Small streets, lot of shops and more restaurants than you can visit in a few weeks. You better google this, too much information to share in a thread on GFY.

Istanbul: Now we are talking. What you can and should not miss is the Great bazar. This is sort of the heart of Turkey. A maze of small streets with literal thousands small shops. Don’t miss the Topkapi Palace, the Sultan Ahmet Mosque (also called the blue mosque) and make sure you make a boattrip on the Bosporus. You can’t miss the Galata bridge (the connection between two parts of town) and walking over it (lots of fishermen there) it will bring you to the district with the name Sultanahmet. Well, google this as well, it is too much ;-).

Turkish people are very friendly and hospitable. But they love your money. Paying in Euro’s won’t be a problem / is preferred.

If you like golf, the Instanbul Golf Club is great and you should spend a week or so in Belek. If I recall this well, they have over 15 courses by now.

Actually the people in Istanbul at least are quiet friendly to tourists, yes even the ones not trying to sell you something. I would tell them I'm from Canada and they would want to talk about hockey for hours... I hate hockey but at least they are nice

take care if you have blonde girlfriend.It was my biggest problem there.Not so big as in egypt but still,problem. Similar was in Tunisia. They moan something every time they pass by and can insult you (in Tunisia, not in Turkey). I dont really know what is problem with 'muslims and blonde females, why they are obsessed. Istanbul is modern and big city so there must be some blonde hair color to buy. As soon as we got in hotel, owner started asking my GF questions and offering some shit. He stopped once saw me, but they are so pathetic.

Biggest problem was seagul that shitted directly on my head in the middle of some square full of people,far from hotel.

I didn't go to Istanbul, I went to Kusadasei and loved it. Weather was great, people were nice, markets were a blast, haggling with people. I remember the food was really good and partying was cheap as hell. It was about 8 years ago I went tho so maybe things have changed. Friends of mine have been to Istanbul and loved it. I'm sure you'll have a blast Billy!

Great holiday destination. Been there many times (Bodrum, Side, Belek and many other areas). The 4/5 star hotels tend to be nice (big spacious hotels with loads of pools/multiple restaurants and are comfortable). Food can be repetitive on an All-Inclusive so it`s always wise to eat out for a few nights.

Prices in touristy areas have increased considerably in recent years what with the increasing popularity of the country as a holiday destination but this is to be expected.

It`s been years since I have been to Bodrum but if you`re into bars/clubs, Halikarnas was an experience (halikarnas.com.tr).

Have a good time. If you`re going soon, the heat in August can be very extreme (I remember being in one of the Bodrum markets late into the evening and happened to clock a thermometer that was on a stall which read early 100`s °F).
