Place a .htaccess in your wp-admin directory that only allows your IP to access it.

Code:

AuthUserFile /dev/null
AuthGroupFile /dev/null
AuthName "Example Access Control"
AuthType Basic
<LIMIT GET>
order deny,allow
deny from all
allow from your.ip.address.here
</LIMIT>

great idea...if your IP changes you lock yourself out...be sure you have root and shell access if you do this so you can reset the ip

FTP access to the domain is all you need to change the htaccess.
