Gaffney woman admits selling porn tapes door-to-door

A Gaffney woman said she was in a bind and needed some quick cash when she decided to go door-to-door selling pornographic videotapes.

Jeanette Ellis, 52, said she found a box of dirty movies on her street, and watched a few of them before she hit the streets.

"I said, 'I'll sell them to somebody who might want them,'" Ellis told FOX Carolina's Greg Funderburg. "I was going to get like $5 for them. There [were] like 15 tapes."

Ellis said her money-making effort was quashed when she knocked on the door of one home, where someone had called the police.

"I waited outside, and the police showed up," Ellis said.

Ellis was charged with not having a permit to solicit sales.

Yeah its a dumb law needing a permit to sell shit, although I kind of understand in some situations where consumables are being sold, but still, I remember seeing neighborhood kids with lemonade stands on the street in summertime... Its been a long time since I saw that.

There was a story a year or two back where some kids got citations for selling lemonade for like $1 a glass for charity because they didn't have a permit... Stupidity knows no bounds.

This type of permit is not unusual across towns in America. It's a way for the municipalities to make $. You want to sell porn VHS tapes door to door? Go to their administrative building, town hall, whatever and pay for a solicitation permit (yeah solicitation). It's to deter scammers from coercing people who live in those towns to give cash to fake charities and shit like that. These permits have been around for years, nothing new. There are exceptions, usually, Girls Scouts don't need permits to sell their cookies

It?s mostly to let wandering scam artists know that their house repairs and other scams usually directed at the elderly will get them jail time.
Also gives a level playing field for local merchants who have to buy a city license.
