I think I actually agree with you. My middle school and high school always had a cop there.. I thought it was fairly normal, you occasionally seen him roaming the hallways.

- Happy to say I was raised in a school district and during a time where such a thing was UNTHINKABLE.

- This is the unfortunate price a gun crazed society has to pay.

- Curious to see if this even helps. They have had two attacks on military bases where everyone there is an armed solider, so I'm really not sure putting one in a school is going to help much. I hope it does, and in theory it's a good idea if it will protect kids, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Not eveyone on a military base is armed...in fact on any given day a handful may be armed. A soldiers arms are locked up in an Armory so he/she do not even have quick access to their assigned weapon/weapons.

I suppose an armed cop in a school is still less insane than armed teachers, and much less insane than armed students.

If they can implement guns that can ONLY be fired by the owner of the gun, that would make it much less insane.

With the technologies of today, you would think they could accomplish this pretty easily if they wanted to, but for some reason it doesn't happen.

The navy shooter shot a guard and then used the guard's gun to keep shooting.

An armed guard or cop in a school may seem reasonable (maybe in some districts), but when you realize the cop's gun is another weapon that has now entered the building, it may not be so sensible without locking the weapon's use to the cop, and ONLY the cop.

That's not true really. I've lived on a military base and we very rarely had weapons, only when we went out on training. It's not like you walk in the PX (store) and see people lugging around assault rifles.

Froma community policing stand point it makes total sense. The schools are were the criminals are. I grew up with a cop in the school and never thought anything about it. I think they still do it where I went.

Even though most people are not armed on base, if you were to count the number of people with a firearm on a military base vs the number of people with a firearm at any given school, I'd wage a military base would have more armed people than a school.

Because when it fails, and it WILL fail, people die. There's a lot of force from a round going off inside a gun.. not a great place to put electronics.

i was one of those at-risk kids in school like the nutters such as the columbine shooters and the odd one who decides to pop some off in those scandanavian countries and post it on youtube, ville might agree with that perception.

i did have access to guns at a young age, many hunting rifles my father owned. 303's, 308's, .22's... they were freely sitting in clothing wardrobes. i would pick them up, aim them at mid-air, there were bullets, and a fuck load of them, but i still didn't have the mental capacity to understand what i was doing, how to do it, why i was doing it, and so on.

fortunately i never became a gun nut, as i didn't have the mental inclination to swing that way.

why my father would keep hi-powered hunting rifles with a fairly large cache of ammunition all ready to go with someone who knew how to load the gun, then shoot it, maybe to kill, is beyond me.

i think i should be happy i am who i am because i could have become obsessed with guns and hunting and become a real redneck.

But the money will only end up at schools that are in the city and not the small communities

The town I grew up in has changed drastically in this regards. I was in high school in the mid-late 1980's in a small redneck town. At any given time you could go out to the parking lot and find a truck with a gun rack that had a rifle in it. During hunting season it looked like a sporting goods store because the guys would bring their rifles to school so they could head out and hunt as soon as school got out.

Today, in that same school, they have a full time police officer and they recently arrested a kid because he made a rubber band gun that a teacher thought looked "too realistic."
