Web Hosting practices: paying up front for the services?

Wanted to ask what's GFY opinion on paying up front for the hosting services.

For example, my server fees are $400/m and the new hosting company on Aug 1st asked to pay it in full for this upcoming month of August. Essentially, the services have not been rendered yet (they month just started) but I still have to pay.

I have never encountered this before, so I wonder if this is a widespread and acceptable practice.

Yes, I would say it's absolutely normal to pay for hosting in advance. I don't think I've ever been billed otherwise.

Strange question,i mean when you ordering new server you cant get it unless you pay for first month,Cant recall for any company which would let you to use a server one month without payment unless it was some promo with first month free.

My porn site's hosting bill's due date is first day of the mont. But I pay my other hosting (simple web hosting on shared server) for the whole year beforehand (well, due date is on billed year).

Let's say i ordered a server for $400/m. It's ready and operational from Aug 1st.
Shouldn't I pay for the first month on Aug 31?

If they give credit to you, yes (paying after receiving product/ service = credit)

Most definitely not. Most hosting companies require you to pay for the services before they give you the machine. We would get scammed left and right if that were the case. Give people servers with out paying, they would leave before the end of the month

Same here. In fact it would be strange or even impossible (due to the cheaters) otherwise.
And not only for hosting - most things/sales in the world works that way. So I am genuinely surprised someone would think it may be strange

I've found the last couple of hosts I have signed up with to be extremely anal about payments, requiring me to submit proof of ID, and proof of physical possession of the credit card, before they activate my account. If they have enough trouble with fraud when services are billed in advance, imagine what would happen if they shifted to an arrears model...

Absolutely not. Do you pay your rent at the end of the month or the beginning? Do you pay for your groceries after you eat them?

Do your customers pay before they get their hamburger or after?

Do your surfers pay before they access the porn site or after?

Do I pay before or after I hop on my next flight?

Do I pay before or after I roll out of the dealership in my new car?

You pay before you get it, that's standard and WIDELY accepted.

It would be the ideal system for those web hosts that want to encourage 30 day scam artists and to increase their time chasing late payments for everyone else...otherwise not so much.

i doubt your landlord would let you move in spend the whole month and then let you pay at the end of the month.

That said, over the last 16 or so years, there might have been a time or two when we worked out a special payment arrangement for a client. But most pay up front and expect to pay up front.

But I can give you a little something off your 2nd month though

Normal to pay upfront unless they are giving you the first month free. Eliminates cheap spamming fucks as well.

You always pay in advanced for hosting. Never heard of any other option. I even prepay for a full year to get extra discount.
