Put as much as you can.

For 2014 and 2015, your total contributions to all of your traditional and Roth IRAs cannot be more than:
$5,500 ($6,500 if you?re age 50 or older), or

I hear you, but what can the Roth IRA be invested in? Mutual funds, bonds, etc. for the best return?

True there is a cap, but you can still make partial contributions.

I was thinking more along the lines of people who make more money in the biz where putting away 5k annual is really not doing you much. I have a 401k that allows me to contribute far more than the 5k a Roth allows and it is also tax differed.

I max my 401K and max a Roth IRA as well. If you need a quick $10k just go to you Roth IRA sell some stocks and there you go. If someone only has a 401K they can only borrow money.
