Slow, unexciting, but a strong start. The big players of Westeros are scrambling for position in a vacuum of power.

It's episode 2 of the new season and already I'm seeing some fairly major diversions from the book-based storyline. Plus a few minor ones. Now I'm even more interested than I was, to see where they go with the new plotlines.

No major spoilers please, but does Arya train to become kind of badass in that house?

No one can really spoil that at this point because even in the books that storyline hasn't progressed far enough yet. But there are clues, many of them not so subtle. I believe she is slowly going to become a "faceless man", but also possess uber sword and weapons skills. She's going to have to walk through fire (possibly literally) to get there, but I strongly suspect that anyone who is still alive that is on her 'list' is going to regret whatever they did to cross her.

I also believe several names will be added to that list in future. Once she makes her return to Westeros she will no doubt discover some things went on against her family members that she doesn't approve of. And we've all already seen a faceless man in action. (that guy in Harenhall who gave her "three names--three deaths").

Yes, total badass.

I could be wrong of course, but at this point I don't think I am.

Edit: I forgot to say, it's also possible that while she's becoming this "badass" her need for revenge will be trained out of her. In that event I still believe certain heads will roll so to speak, by her hand, just not in the way we might expect.

Why did this have to happen to Sansa Stark?

But Cersei Lannister gets what she deserves.

It's a pretty big diversion from what actually happens in the books. But it's also amazing that she managed to avoid it for so long in the story.

This however falls pretty much precisely in line with the books.

Although she deserves a whole lot worse. No punishment is too great for this C with an 'unt', in my awesomely awesome opinion. :D

What exactly is it you're looking for?

This story is packed with more twists and turns and intertwining suspense and layer upon layer of intrigue than just about any other that's come before it. But you actually have to listen to what they're saying to begin to pick up on even a tenth of it.

Jon Snow Battles the White Walkers

Did you predict onslaught of white walkers in 'Hardhome'?

What Is Jon Snow's Sword Made Of?

Hot chick but unfortunately she didn?t spend much time among the living.

Jon Snow's Sword is made of Valyrian Steel... just like Ned Stark's sword, Ice, was that he used for the beheading's -- before Tywin melted it down and gave a sword to Joff and one to Jame (that he then gave to Brienne). Interesting to find out that it doesn't shatter against White Walker weapons.

I am so happy with last night's episode. We finally got Tyrion and Daenerys, plus Arya gets a job

Did we just break the pattern of episode 9 of the series being the epic battle? Or will Jon and the wildlings have to take back The Wall from a usurper?

These are such huge diversions from the books that I honestly have no idea what's going to happen next. Which is in a way a good thing.

For example, in the books this Hard Home thing was more or less just referred to here or there. Jon sends word to Eastwatch to dispatch the King's fleet to aid/pick them up and take the wildlings there to safety. He himself does not go there.

In another part (book 5 I think) there is also mention made that some pirates had gone to Hard Home, picked up some wildlings with the promise of helping them, only to enslave the lot of them once they were at sea.

As for Tyrion, the differences in that storyline are uncountable at this point, but again the result is basically the same... he reaches his destination (Daenarys), it's just that in the books it took a lot longer and a lot more happens to him along the way, with a lot more characters, one of which is.... wait for it... another TARGARYEN. The series seems to have cut that out entirely.

I'm excited to hear that. I'm about a quarter through Book 3 and I am enjoying it. I do like the depth of background in the books that's left out (so far) from the shows. I like that there's still something for book readers that's surprising. I know from friends who've read them that some of the White Walker stuff is brand new, too.

It seems in character with the Jon Snow of the show that he'd go himself - even if it's because he was forced to. And it sets up a great encounter back at The Wall with those who think this is a shit idea.

Il be keen on seeing how many viewers they have lost this season as the standard has dropped. Really a load of piss just now. Slow, dull and feels like im watching a show that has 10 different stories. Jon snow on the wall, aya training, the imp, the dragon queen etc. Too many different stories, they need to try bring the characters together

I read the existing five books just over three years ago, and have been waiting for "The Winds of Winter" to come out ever since. But, in light of this season of the TV series coming out I decided to re-read all the books, as there is a LOT in there, a lot to digest, a lot of history and family names and geography to learn. In my initial read-through I was so revved up by this story and by the quality of Martin's writing that I tore through the five books in a matter of weeks.

Not this time.

On this second read-through I'm now picking up on all the great stuff, the details, hints, clues, etc, that I mostly missed or didn't really pick up on the first time. I'm halfway through book five right now, and at this point I have to say I'd recommend to everyone to do what I did, that being read the books, then wait a while and read them all again. Those who are saying the series is "boring" etc would understand the plot and all the intrigue so much more if they did so.

Oh, I doubt you'll be disappointed by the book storyline. Jon still does a fair bit of dealing with the wildlings, but Martin keeps this so-called Whitewalker army a bit more mysterious and unseen. You get a good taste of it during the Fist of the First Men battle (as is also in the TV series), but in the books he's really making you wait as the story builds towards.... something. Whereas in the HBO series, well, as we all saw Hardhome. It was well-done, but a huge diversion from the books.

I think this show is not good for some of you ADD sufferers.

Every season is a slow burn and all the good stuff goes down in the last few episodes. The best things are happening when the characters are interacting, if you actually pay attention instead of waiting for the next action scene.

how do you know its all leading up to something fantastic? for all you know its just going to take a dumb turn and spin out into dog shit like a lot of tv series. I like it myself but calling people out for not liking it is pretty stupid in itself. reminds me of people who read too much into inception or the matrix movies... 'you just don't get it man...'

I tried reading the first book, gave up after like 40 pages. It's too hard to read, 1000 different names get introduced etc...

I was just happy that the giant made it out of that white walker cluster fuck. He was kicking some major ass.

Ive read the books also CD and the last few episodes I was like - none of this shit happens in the books.

Quite understandable. Here's my suggestion to you; Try again. This time just read the story, and don't worry about tracking all the names, all the obsure references to 100 houses and history lessons, etc. Just enjoy the story. It's so engrossing that you'll literally tear through all five books as fast as you can.

But along the way you'll begin to notice that you in fact ARE starting to pick up on all that hard-to-absorb stuff. You'll remember that someone or an event was mentioned before, and at least some of the 'obscure' stuff will begin to sink in.

As I said, I'm at the tail end of my second read-through of all the existing books, and I'm picking up a veritable ton of things I missed the first time.

Wun-Wun is his name. Yes, in the books he just came through the wall peacefully after the battle with Mance Rayder's army. And he did kick ass. If they could find a Valeryan weapon big enough for him to use he would be unstoppable against the dead. ha

As for the series, hopefully the end-game will still be basically the same as the books, but they're taking so many alternate routes that it's fast becoming a completely separate thing.

Here's the latest news I could find on book six ---

Game of Thrones season 6: George RR Martin doing 'anything he can' to get new book The Winds of Winter out before next HBO series airs - News - Books - The Independent

Seems it won't be long now. Before the end of this year I would think, or hope.

Game of thrones is not an action movie. People looking for that should go watch mad max instead....

It is a terrific series of books covering some very interesting themes. What makes a good king? Is it the same thing that makes a good conquerer? A good swordsman? Are evil people actually better at ruling than innocent ones? Is it better to be feared or loved? What place does religion hold in a king's arsenal of tools? How should a king deal with allies and enemies?

The books (and show) ask and answer dozens of these questions. Those of you who say it is boring might enjoy it more if you watch it as a lesson in how to be a king.

How would you have handled Jora coming back?
Is Jon Snow doing the right thing with the wildlings?
If sacrificing his daughter would save the world should Stannis do it?
Should Bolton wait for Stannis or send out Ramsey to attack?
Is Ramsey's actions toward Sansa so different from Danerys and her new fiancée?

There are dozens more questions to consider. If you aren't considering them it should come as no surprise that you dislike the show. If you are considering them... have you become a better king, or perhaps even a better person, by reading/watching it? Probably.

Because every season follows the same pattern.

HBO shows are not designed to deliver weekly peaks like network shows. They take their time and give you something big to chew on here and there.

It's ok to not like it, but anyone who says nothing is happening isn't paying attention. I don't know if you said that or not, but there's so much going on in every scene, and nothing is wasted. The creators of this show have a lot of material from the books to distill down into an hour per week show, so I'm sure they choose carefully. It's anything but boring.

Further to: the books being hard to read. While it's true you at times get inundated with a wall of names, places, backstory and events, (all of which must have taken years to dream up, write, and keep track of) you also get to read some of the most richly-nuanced writing ever written in recent times. And I don't say that lightly, being as I'm a writer myself.

Here's just a small example (from book 5):

Martin doesn't just tell you that the sun is setting on a cold snowy forest. Rather he puts it this way:
Night was falling fast. The shafts of sunlight had vanished when the last thin slice of the sun was swallowed beneath the western woods. The pink snow drifts were going white again, the color leaching out of them as the world darkened. The evening sky had turned the faded grey of an old cloak that had been washed too many times, and the first shy stars were coming out.
Then, in an earlier part of the same book, he describes what night felt like during a sea voyage:
Only the brightest stars were visible, all to the west. A dull red glow lit the sky to the northeast, the color of a blood bruise. Tyrion had never seen a bigger moon. Monstrous, swollen, it looked as if it had swallowed the sun and woken with a fever. Its twin, floating on the sea beyond the ship, shimmered red with every wave.
He doesn't just say what happened, he makes you feel it and see it as if you were there. And that goes for basically every part of the story. You get to smell what the room or the swamp or the forest etc smells like, what the food tastes like, how it feels as the roar of a giant rumbles through you, etc.

You can tear through this story like it's a race to get to the finish, or you can stop once in a while and consider the words, the thought that went into the writing, and you'll begin to appreciate the sheer depth of this epic tale.

She's quite the busy little bee. Super talented.

And utterly fearless when it comes to sex/nude scenes.

Daenerys takes flight in 'The Dance of Dragons' and Stannis burns Shireen at the stake.

Winter is here and the finale is coming!

Stannis Baratheon has lost a lot of fans after the latest episode of the show.

Did he have any fans? He's always been an asshole -- although I will admit they tried to show his softer side quite a bit this season. Probably for misdirection to pull the rug out from under us like they did last episode. I knew he would go through with it, because he's single-mindedly chasing his goal, and because Game of Thrones doesn't give a fuck. They'll burn a kid to death and laugh at you.

think about that
