Gwyneth Paltrow can't eat on $29/week...

Seems Gwyneth admitted defeat with her $29 food stamp challenge.

Was this a sly viral publicity to raise awareness...or another entitled celeb just attention whoring?

I think her choices were good.
The comment about pasta is negated by the beans and rice she has.

I don't know where they get the figure of $29 though; pretty sure I got more than that during my "OH SNAP" moment.

Catholic churches give away food for low income around here. Every month, maybe twice per month people can pick up a box full of non perishable food.

The cheese and other food comes directly from the US government. I guess there's an easy way to find out how to qualify for that in your area.

Yeah, vegetarians should buy the barbecue pork at Walmart because you are so smart.

Well I'll just consult with my local Black Catholic priest for that cheese.

There's no meat in that pork... and there are other tv dinners without meat. Stop being poor or learn to deal with it.

You don't have to talk to any priests. Catholic Charities Homepage | Catholic Charities USA

Gwyneth isn't a vegetarian. She said herself the reason she failed is, "personally broke and had some chicken and fresh vegetables (and in full transparency, half a bag of black licorice)."

The subject is about people eating on $29; not just Gwyneth(or whatever her name is)

I swear that somewhere out there is a vegetarian trying to eat off food stamps; I swear.

There probably is, but if they are being forced to live on $29 a week for food, maybe they need to rethink their dietary priorities for the moment.

That's probably why it's not tv breakfast and lunch too. You have $3 a day left for those. Plus, if you're on food stamps you can get free commodities which would give you stuff like oatmeal, cereal, canned fruits and veg, pasta, rice, dry beans, juice, etc.

The wife and I just got back from a $70 meal (no drinks) at Mandarin Buffet in Niagara Falls.

Dear Gwyneth: the giant crab legs and shrimp were scrumptuous.

Locally we have community-based vegetable gardens...planted and tended by volunteers who put in a few hours each week working in the garden in return for a share of what it produces. Seeds are donated by local businesses and organizations.

I'm sure something like that would be ideal for poor people wanting to supplement their veggie diet.

But it all goes back to that old adage of teaching a man to fish as opposed to giving him a fish.

That ain't got shit to do with trying to eat off $29 because plenty of people with jobs are trying to eat off that much.

So basically you just want to argue about "lazy motherfuckers" and therefore don't accept her findings.

BTW : All poor people know how to fish; but the rich man owns the pond.

Fucking idiot ass cliche in this day and age.

Naw, I contend it's only fucking idiots who don't realize just how appropo the adage is these days.

"...owns the pond" - really? Good fuckin' lord...what a crock of shit if you actually believe that malarky. It's called a fucking excuse to say 'pity me...pity me...the man is keepin' me down.'

When my wife and I got married, we didn't have a penny between us. We ended up on gov't assistance for a short time while we scrambled to get our shit in order. We both worked part-time, menial jobs just to keep peanut butter in the cupboard. We scraped and saved just enough of a shoe-string budget to reg a website, create some unique content and get it off the ground. I worked 18-20 hour days between my part-time reno job and starting the company. For the first 3 years I went through hellacious sleep deprivation before we started seeing the payoff.

So don't fucking tell me about some rich man owning the pond. That's a bullshit euphemism.

I see the non-productive, baby-breeding "lazy motherfuckers" all day long in neighbourhoods across our city. People who have options - but opt not to take them because it means getting off their subsidized fat asses and getting their hands dirty.

You know I called the local church and asked if their youth group wanted to use some of my land and I would provide the seeds to make a community garden. The kids would just have to come plant, and help tend to it and could bring veggies home to their families. I guess that's what you're doing out there?

I think the whole idea that it is somehow a function of government to feed the poor is flawed to begin with. That should be left to charitable organizations.

Honestly if we really want to solve the problems presented by hunger and poverty we have to start by putting an end to rewarding people for having children that they cannot afford. Forget the racial nonsense because this crosses almost all racial lines. Simply put you get a raise by having more kids that you can support without more government handouts, these kids grow up in the system and all too often grow up to do the same thing. This culture has to stop because at some point the system will collapse.

Now I will be the first to say that to stop it cold turkey so to speak would be cruel but we have to start thinking and looking forward and phase this type of thing out entirely.

I drive by it almost daily. It's a nice little area in a really lousy section of the city, like an oasis of hope. I often see retired seniors working alongside of a few younger people tending the garden. I like to think they're passing along their old-school agricultural experience to a younger generation.

You might wanna try pestering the church a little more about it - if you have the inclination and motivation. Maybe if they see how determined you are...they'll come to realize what a great offer it is.

Best of luck on it...

I actually saw welfare cunt with ebt in whole foods the other day. She was with her date I guess and had asparagus, cheese and few other small things in her basked. Dude was jiving the whole time as we were waiting in line and telling jokes. So sure enough card gets rejected, she gets her phone out to "reset her pin". Guy feel embarrassed but wouldn't pay. So I was like fuck me sideways. Thank god checkout girl had way to put her order on hold while LaDasha was on the phone and ring me up.

PS: I had bucket of organic fried chicken and 3 dollar bottle of Chablis.

This.

The problem isn't how do we feed the poor and hungry, it is how to we put an end to that need. There are always going to be people who get injured or sick and are in a bad situation to no fault of their own, but there are plenty of people who are just milking the system.

A friend of mine worked a grocery for several years. One of their regular customers was a woman who had three kids from three different dads and was on welfare/food stamps. One day she came in and was beaming with pride and couldn't wait to tell my friend how her oldest daughter was 17 and had gotten knocked up and just got her "benefits." She was proud like her daughter was following in the family business.

That is the kind of stuff we need to find a way to put an end to.

I see people buying expensive prepared food with those cards sometimes. I can't help but think they're only poor because they're careless with their money.

So like $25 for the chicken and $3 for the wine.

Now I will be the first to say that to stop it cold turkey so to speak would be cruel but we have to start thinking and looking forward and phase this type of thing out entirely.
this couldn't be further from the truth. most homeless people aren't supporting kids, they're fiending for themselves. and suggesting that a homeless lifestyle is passed down to chiildren like it's an acceptable and good way of life really doesn't align with the reality of what people experience living on the streets and trying to eat on $29/week.

There is a gas station I know where they sell pizza slices for 7 bucks. I often wondered who in the fucking world would buy it. Then someone told me how this ebt scam works.

Well, they save money on their house note, home insurance, property taxes, electricity bill, lawn care and other maintenance.

Not disparaging the homeless. They probably qualify for welfare, food stamps, and any other subsidies. They will have opportunities for low cost housing. People are out there offering them hot meals and cots. I think we're talking about the working poor; those with homes and jobs that still fall under the poverty line.

Please point out where I said a damn thing about homeless people.....and if you dont think freeloading is passed down like a family business you are seriously mistaken.

but you didn't address my main point which was pretty simple...whether its 29 dollars or 290 dollars it should NOT be a function of government to pass out these handouts. Its for churches and charitable organizations.

I have no problem with a VERY temporary government solution that REQUIRES community service. It should NEVER become a lifestyle as it has now.

I believe it works like this:

With EBT (food stamp card) you can buy certain "uncooked" foods. For example you can go to Papa Murphy's Pizza and buy a pizza since it wasn't cooked at that location and is therefore not considered a prepared food. Because of this there are certain deli foods that you can buy with an EBT card. Lunch meat and cheese would be good examples. These sleazy gas stations just ring the pizza up as a "deli" item which allows people to use their EBT card to pay for it. Of course it is illegal, but the odds of getting caught are pretty low.

Hmm, okay, but what is the benefit?
Lets say I have $7 in my EBT. I would better buy real food for $7, sell it to someone for $5 and buy the same slice for $3 at a normal price + have $2 left.
What I mean that margin is too high compared so simple scam when you cash out by selling your ebt money for real money.

You are over-thinking it. Many of these places won't have two prices for the pizza. They charge whatever they charge for it and that is the price. If you are in a gas station looking for food you likely aren't doing much price shopping.

But, assuming there were two different prices. I would then have to go to a store, buy $7 worth of food, try to find someone who will pay me $5 for that food then I travel to the gas station (or wherever I am buying it from) and buy the slice of pizza for $3. That is a hell of a lot of effort save myself $2.

LOL, I am not talking neither about 2 different prices, nor about literally doing 7>5>3>2 thing.

My point is that EBT dollars have real dollar value in the black market. So lets say going rate is 75%.
So when you have $7 in your ebt you actually have $5.25 of real money.
Lets say going rate for slice in normal gas station is $2 (random guess).
So you would be buying 2 pizza for 5.25.
Ok, lets say you are traveling so you would grab a slice if you really want it, but would you go for that slice for the second time? No.
While it sounds like people actually buy those slices on a constant basis, that what is not a smart way to cash out your ebt.
On the other hand - you can not expect all of ebt holders to be smart

In theory the EBT dollars have a real cash value to someone. But you need to know someone who will buy that food from you in order to get that cash value out of it. We are also talking about a reasonably small amount of money, and many of these places that allow people to buy pizza (or other non-EBT food) with their EBT card also often let them buy booze. So some guy is in the mood for a beer and pizza so he walks to the nearby store that will let him buy a 40 oz and a slice on his EBT card. He's not worried about the few real dollars he might have wasted. He is just happy to have his booze and slice.

you are thinking like a businessman, most people using ebt don't think like that... they think "I'm hungry, I want a pizza"... they go to a gas station pay $7 without even thinking for a second, they got the money for free so who gives a shit how much it costs, it could just as easily cost $17/slice and it would still sell well...

the program is called "Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)", it's not "government will feed me / free food program"... the whole point is to give poor families some $$ to "supplement" few bucks towards their food expenses... it's not supposed to cover 100% of their food expenses...

the fact that it could even be possible to live off food stamps proves there is something wrong with the whole setup.... as the whole point was to "supplement", not to cover 100%....

That is all? I thought that food is supposed to be cheap in US. Although vegetables are not usually that cheap and at least limes cost quite much in here. Beans, peas and rice, about 3 € per 0,5-1 kg bag. Let's make it 9 euros. Eggs another 3, it is now 12 euros. 17 euros left. Maybe she could have spent that portion more wisely.

There was article some time ago (about research in UK) that poor people have troubles to afford eat healtly, at least vegetable wise. If you buy much limes, chilis, etc. that is surely even harder. Similarly there was research about US hobos, and they are pretty much all fat. They eat chips, drink soda, etc. with much calories, but with little nuttrition value. Thus they are fat and poorly nuttritioned.
