New Tesla Model S 0 to 60MPH in .... 2.8 Seconds. Wow!

In what I'm sure is a nod to Spacebars, They call it "Ludicrous Mode". Tesla to offer faster 'Ludicrous Mode' - Jul. 17, 2015

Have you seen the typical person behind the wheel of a model s? That person isn't ready for that. Even more important, there is absolutely zero point in making a sedan that quick and then using that as a marketing gimmick. Just like 500+ HP cars. It's truly ludicrous and ludicrous has no place in a family sedan on public roads.

On the contrary, the driver is totally ready for that. Someone who buys a Model S has done their research, and they know what the car can do. But besides that, you have to tab the screen and set the driving mode from "Normal" to "Insane" to "Ludacris". So its not like the driver won't know what he is doing.

Of course there is. It's already a great car, and the super acceleration not only shows off how cool electric cars can be, it shows the petrol-heads that Electric can really compete against them, and should be taken seriously. And as a marketing gimmick, it really works too.

Of course it does. Try to think about the 30-60 year old driver who can afford a $100k car. What does he want? He wants something practical that has room enough for the wife and kiddies, and he wants it to be energy efficient.

Of course, he also wants to say fuck that, and by a speed demon like a Corvette, but a Corvette doesn't mean the other criteria.

The Model S gives him everything. It's a quiet sedan for long trips, ultra efficient, etc. But then with just a couple of clicks, he how has a sports car with crazy acceleration.

By the way, changing the modes also changes the handling characteristics of the car too. The steering ratio becomes tighter, the shocks become stiffer, and if you take the option, the car also drops an inch or 2 closer to the ground.

to the contrary? pft. obviously, you haven't seen too many of these car being driven on the roads, i see them daily in OC. and if you think an untrained driver is prepared to break the laws(unlawful display of speed) and launch at these speeds without preparation or training, all while flaunting the laws, then you are just speaking emotionally about a product you are emotional about.

this is nothing more than a luxury car gimmick. just like luxury car commercials that show the car drifting and fishtailing around on wet pavement.

again, 500+ hp cars are overkill and way beyond what most any driver is capable of driving, it's all a marketing gimmick. and it's not about cars competing, you think our public streets, roads and highways are a race track where fat middle-aged bald guys compete it out for biggest dick competition b/w corvettes and teslas. that's not what our roads are for.

My car is similiar in profile and styling to the Tesla S - with 195hp - and no need to go from 0mph to a speeding ticket in 2.8secs.

I do like the Teslas, though. I see them attracting attention on the main street in Niagara-On-The-Lake amongst the snobbier rich folk.

Overkill? Of course it is, but HP is still a deciding factor for a lot of people and car companies are happy to use HP as a part of their marketing, so why not Tesla?

I think I love you.
i expect more from the leading mind of our generation. ludicrous speed? come on, that's lowest common denominator marketing. why not get rick moranis in a big helmet to do the commercial for it.

i guess tesla's saving plaid speed for the special edition.
