The Army has released an image taken by a combat photographer moments before she was killed in an explosion during a 2013 live-fire training exercise in eastern Afghanistan.

Spc. Hilda I. Clayton, a visual information specialist assigned to the 55th Signal Company (Combat Camera), was killed while photographing a live-fire training exercise on July 2 in Laghman Province. Four Afghan National Army soldiers were also killed when a mortar tube accidentally exploded.

One of the Afghan soldiers killed was a photojournalist whom Clayton had been training.

The primary mission of Combat Camera soldiers is to accompany soldiers on deployments to document the history of combat operations.

"Clayton's death symbolizes how female soldiers are increasingly exposed to hazardous situations in training and in combat on par with their male counterparts," the Army said in a statement.

Clayton's name has since been added to the Defense Information School Hall of Heroes at Fort Meade. The award for the winner of Combat Camera's annual competition was also named after her.

"The Spc. Hilda I. Clayton Best Combat Camera (COMCAM) Competition consists of five days of events to test joint service combat camera personnel on their physical and technical skills," the Army said.

Looks like the 4 of them got killed instantly. They were right inside the kill zone.

Amazing that the photos were recoverable though. The first one shows shrapnel flying right by the lens.

it's a mortar! a shell is dropped in a tube and the spring action shoots it in the air. not an expert but why do they need to do this by hand??

Just don't try to even compare the US and Russian army. In Russia the military service is a duty, in the USA it's a job. Here every man of 18-27 year old has to serve in army. That's not his choice. He just has to do it and he won't get paid for that. Course we have a mercenary army as well (e.g. spetsnaz that are trained to be dropped into Western Europe and the USA in case of war to "take care" about your families if they've survived the nuclear strike). But those are getting paid for their job and nobody here gives a shit when they've got killed. They are fuckin' mercenaries.

So I want to make it clear: there are 18 year old kids who serve in army because they "must" and there are mercenaries who's getting paid for that. I I feel for the regular army kids and I don't give a flying fuck for paid soldiers.

So you are saying during mandatory military service your guys don't get paid at all? That's kinda like slavery don't you think? Even during the draft in Vietnam & ww2 our guys were paid.

Nothing in the world could be further from the truth.

They don't build homes? Don't treat tooth decay? Don't educate kids? You understand the military does ALL of this, right? They also have cooks, programmers, mechanics; I had a friend of mine in the Marines who was a mortician. Every job in the civilian world is duplicated in the military.

Every place I lived in while in the Marines were built by Marines, every one in the hospital I went to was run by the Navy. For the most part the US military doesn't have civilian ANYTHING - They cut their own grass, mow their own lawns, run their own gyms.
