Going through my stats I am seeing a big increase in bounce rates over the past three months. Besides discovering the cause for this I'd like to improve overall bounce rates anyway. So:

What are some tried and true techniques for decreasing a website's bounce rate?

Try HTML image trick, where everytime when user click on image, it open new html page with centered image and navigation menu

15 years ago a good idea to reduce the bounce rate was loaded jpg line by line on the modem - anybody remember this?

Actually a simple Warning Page will reduce bounce rate by a mile.

Do you know what a bounce is?
A bounce is someone coming from Google visit your site and goes back to Google.
The bounce rate is 100%. Your page does not engage.

To reduce the bounce rate give away all your content. If the bounce rate is still high, your content sucks.

The most important question is what is the source of the traffic? If you are really serving what people are looking for, there should be no problem.

that means a lot of text and a video that will take some time to load. This shouldn't be a problem if you are getting traffic from SE, but if there are some other sources like buying traffic or spamming and popups then I don't have a clue.

I know exit intent popup scripts like Exit-intent-popup. Maybe it´s good to reduce the bounce rate, but that´s not a real warning...

You just need to have what your visitors are looking for. Add hot and interesting content matching your main keywords.
