quite a few people mistake socialism for communism and many also aren't aware of the differences between classic socialism and modern democratic socialism.

to that end, I've been accused of being a communist.

Yes. I live in Toronto. My local city councillor was head of the head Communist Party of Canada (Manitoba) when she lived there many years ago. I think she'd consider herself a social democrat now. She not a friend but I've met her a number of times.

I suspect most people outside the USA know what a social democrat is since many of them are proudly our politicians and have even formed governments.

My father was officially a communist, but he has hated the communist system all the time and he was telling about it openly. So why he was a member of the communist party? Because it was the only way to get a high position @ his facility (senior engineer) and... to get free apartments for his wife and kids. Thus he didn't consider himself as a communist, but officially he was.
