:stop Biggest earthquake in 20 years rocks Southern California, strong aftershocks expected

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary 6.4 magnitude rocked Southern California on Thursday, marking the strongest earthquake in the region since 1999, officials said.

"We will continue to have a lot of aftershocks," seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones warned at a news conference following the quake. "I think the chance of having a magnitude 5 [aftershock] ... it's probably greater than 50-50."

The Fourth of July quake, which struck at about 10:30 a.m. local time, was centered in a remote area near Searles Valley in the Mojave Desert, about 150 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

"This is an isolated enough location that that's going to greatly reduce the damage," Jones said.

She added, "This is a large enough earthquake that it probably did break through to the surface of the earth."

I remember the 1999 one - I was staying in 'The Red Roof Inn' off of Ventura and Winnetka at the time - Entire place shook to fuck, but with it being wood and built to do that, we just went back to sleep... Memories. Nearly 20 years ago...

It shook here for about 10 seconds, about 150-160 miles away from the epicenter.

I just saw it in the news. Video of a room shaking and the tv falling over. We have hurricanes here and that’s no fun either.

I’m trying to think of a safe state in the USA without hurricanes, flooding, tornadoes, earthquakes and snowstorms. Dakotas, Montana, maybe Wyoming would be a safe place.

Montana and Wyoming are the home of Yellowstone National Park. What lies beneath is an active supervolcano, the largest volcanic system in North America. While the chances of a mega eruption are slim, it's a huge ticking bomb that could could go off at any time. The last mega eruption 640,000 years ago is estimated to have been about 1.5 million times more powerful than the Little Boy atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

I experienced the earthquake in Mexico City two years ago and was like being in a warzone. I would take a holiday if i was living there and probably not return. Take care, buy some water and flashlights and fill up the tank, you never know.

Yep i was in bed and woke up to the bed moving from side to side. Looked out of the window to see the glass fence moving side to side and the ocean moving in the opposite direction. Unless you have experienced this it's difficult to understand how helpless you feel. It's not like the rocking of a boat that you can get off of if you don't like it. In an earthquake there is nowhere to go ?

I'm by the beach and didn't feel a damn thing because of all the bedrock here. My kid felt it at work three miles inland though; he said it lasted about a minute.

When your bridges start falling into the damn ocean, give us a call. Otherwise go back to what you were doing.

They say there will be aftershocks, but in 30% of the cases it can be a warning for a bigger one coming cause it is a pre-shock.
