In an astounding Christmas gift, an Eagle Rock church is wiping out $5.3 million in medical debt for thousands of low-income Los Angeles area residents.

Using more than $50,000 worth of donations from parishioners, Christian Assembly Church is working with a debt-forgiveness nonprofit to help erase bills for 5,555 households who earn less than twice the federal poverty level.

Twenty-eight cities in Los Angeles County were selected for the debt-relief program based on neighborhoods where church members live. Areas represented by 15 or more households from within the church community were chosen, including the city of Los Angeles, Azusa, Hollywood, San Gabriel, Sylmar and Glendale.

“We are able to give a Christmas gift to the people of Los Angeles, no strings attached,” pastor Tom Hughes announced to cheers and a standing ovation during the church’s Christmas services last weekend.

This act is an exception to the overwhelming rule of churches enriching a top few with vast wealth at the expense of the masses of followers. The Joel Osteens, Billy Grahams and Joyce Meyers of the world are sadly just a few examples of the bilking of the faithful by narcissistic egomaniacs; and the lavishness of most large churches speak for themselves in pointing out where most of their money goes.

The entire purpose of conservatives and churches is to take care of those who are in need. Churches used to help feed and house the homeless, and help them with healthcare. Conservatives used to support immigrants, legal or not.

Somewhere along the line the conservatives have pushed this over to the government, and then when in office they cut off as much aid as possible.

Uh, no. They spend IN TOTAL 171 Billion per year, of which, 2.7% is for charities (4.7 Billion) per The Economist. Each of the 270 Bishops make independent spending decisions.

The 171B includes salaries for over 1 Million people, rents, electricity, heating, repair, health care, fund raising, travel. Keep in mind that the Catholic Church is the largest real estate owner and landlord in many cities such as New York so it has huge real estate related expenses. The Catholic Church also spends significant funds spreading anti-contraception and anti-abortion messaging, operating womens "health" centers that focus on stopping abortion and lobbying and influencing governments and law worldwide. It also fights against sex abuse law, spending Millions to keep its pedophile and child molesting priests out of jail.

“We’ve heard a lot about the church’s desire to be accountable and turn over a new leaf,” Williams told CBS. “But when we turn to the form where we can most help people and where we can get the most justice — the courts of justice — the church has been there blocking their efforts.”

The Church runs 5,500 hospitals, 18,000 clinics, 16,000 homes for the elderly and those with special needs, with 65 percent of them located in underdeveloped and developing countries.

It is centrally run, a business organization dedicated to protecting itself at all costs as in WW2 when it allowed millions to die, and did not stand up to Hitler, etc. It has hundreds of Billions of dollars.
