Any Windows Experts Around?
I am not sure what the hell is going on.... but here is what is happening.
The system stopped booting. It keeps going to a grub command. I removed grub and still windows will not start. I try the install/repair USB... it too will lock up and do NOTHING! I reformat both hard drives. Install a fresh windows. Same thing. Somewhere, somehow, it is reading the 2tb hd and the primary drive but it is not, it is the 1td drive that is the primary as it was the 1st drive in this computer, the 2tb was added later. So, every morning, I need to boot a linux system from a usb, then reboot. When I reboot, I can get the windows recovery to work, however, there are no errors. Again, I formatted both drives and started from 0.... I have an MSI MPG-Z390 motherboard, everything was fine for over 2 years then it all turned to shit. No viruses, been scanned and hd's reformatted then again with the fresh install. I have too much invested in new software to just say fuck it all and put both machines back to linux. Any ideas? I have reset the BIOS, tried swapping drive cables... as well as the fresh install. Still nothing! Oh, one last thing... this ONLY happens on a hard boot. I can reboot windows with no issues. Basically, if I never shut down, I won't have a problem LOL.

Windows 10 home, it came with a purchased system... only used it for pulling video from an old canon HD then ended up getting this other program that I do like quite a bit. I will see if that helps but it does seem to read where windows is, it just will not load it. Thing is... no matter what the system does, it should still load the usb right? But that freezes too without loading linux first. Even if only loading from a USB, for some reason it needs that before it will read anything properly. This is SO fucked!

Sounds like your bios is keep trying to boot from device which does not exits. If windows is working fine , i dont see what else could be a problem. Linux is having a grub boot fix option so you can try that too.

Also.... thanks ColMike... been there, done those as well as many other pages with basically the same techniques. The thing is... no matter what the USB should load but it freezes like when the OS tries to load. Might be time to write MSI, their info board has not been real helpful either. Maybe the motherboard is fucked..... if linux didn't still load properly or install I would think that but since it does, that is what is puzzling me.

Boot order is set in the bios. Some PC's have a boot disk option menu, usually accessible via either F2 or F12 when you power on the pc. Del usually allows you to enter the bios, though sometimes it's F2.
You could always unplug the 2TB drive until you get things sorted if nothing else works. |

Check:
Boot order in BIOS Internal harddrives used to have/still have a way of selecting if the drive was Primary, Secondary or Cable select. Check backside of the harddrives. There is usually a setting in modern BIOS to always try booting from a USB first, that is usually done to load for example Winfows Pre-load Environment. You can disable boot from usb. Check your cables so that they are connected to the motherboard in the right order. Since you switched the cables, there is a small possibility you put them back in wrong order.

It would not surprise me. It seems that they are almost making this mandatory with all the limitations.

I did run a system file check, there was some corruption and it was fixed. Thinking this was a good thing and it would be back to normal... Nope! But the boot up was not as bad. Once I saw the system was still acting up, i just loaded linux from a usb, then rebooted. Windows started fine after that. So you are correct, there must be something in the bios that is causing this.... I have tried resetting the BIOS but that did not help.... as for the drive order, does that really matter? It looks like it will look for an OS automatically. USB 1st, CD 2nd HDD 3rd. however I do notice that only the one hard drive is listed without UEFI or USB added to it. It looks like the other HDD is not showing at all or if so, as a USB HDD. Oh yes.... the jump switch on the HDD itself... i totally forgot about those. Good catch.... I know the 1tb was set as the main for sure. The 2 tb should be secondary. Not sure why the OS chose the secondary drive as the primary though. Not sure why this would start happening all of a sudden after 2 years of fully functional operation. Thanks for the tip, will start looking more at the BIOS now.

Also, you can check BIOS Boot by inserting bootable usb flash drive and then see what happening. If it's not booting either, then something is totally fucked.

Funny thing is... nothing has changed. No new hardware, no new software... just windows updates and all of a sudden things turn to shit. Even the fresh install with NO updates is causing issues so not sure what the hell the update was but it seemed to change my entire system.... Funny that formatting everything to 0 still does not bring it back. And where it is a pain in the ass to boot one system just to reboot, it is not as bad as it was with 3 restarts, a repair and sometimes a system restore. So... there is progress Just shoot me now!!!!

So I do this... I load linux from the bootable flash drive and reboot. Windows starts with no issues after this is done. It seems windows will only boot properly from a soft reboot and not a cold start from a full shut down.

Update bios. Take out all memory sticks except 1. Reseat graphics card. Try another graphics card. What is the bios code you are seeing. Check your boot order. Check the drives in disc manager once you boot up. Right click on drives in disc manager and make sure they are active and have letters assigned |

So, you can try reinstalling windows from another boot device or just ask for someone to do it
