has anyone tried buying a domain with lots of monthly visitors? How accurate is that number?

"Traffic" means nothing. It should be proved by some real metrics.
As example - Ahrefs rankings keywords and traffic. Semrush ranking keywords and traffic. |

there's a good chance that "traffic" is not human but just various bots/crawlers etc visiting the site. Wouldn't trust those numbers.

I would do a more thorough analysis of the domain in several services. Trite, if a domain is banned in search networks, then it may not have such a great future
