popped into my head earlier when posting in another thread about AI usage of water when I'm almost as bad. easily 2L a day not counting what I drink at night when I go out dancing/at the daytime office, etc

also on my mind as I'm having surgery tomorrow (nothing serious, just a reconstruction of some cosmetic dental implants I had put in about 13 years ago). normally they'd last at least 15 years but I have osteoporosis so the bones surrounding the implants have weakened a bit. last dental cleaning the doc told me they were a bit wobbly and better to get 'em redone before one fails and I have an embarrassing incident publicly or privately with one coming loose and falling out

was hoping they could just give me some laughing gas and redo the implants as I don't mind a bit of pain but nope, a whole surgery thing that will require gen anesthetic

that means 8 hours with no water leading up to it. fuck me

no food for 8 hours, that's cool, I think that's called tuesday. but no water? man I am gonna be so cranky tomorrow am

relieved to get this done as the 'cross island trips for specialist consult/xrays, etc have been a PITA no matter how gorgeous the travel is, but NOT looking forward to a very parched night and morning

all in all I probs drink 2.5-3 L per day. it's hot here and am very active. but so is everyone else and no one drinks nearly as much as me

just curious, how much y'all drink?

Not nearly as much as I should, and unless it's cold, it sort of tastes nasty. A friend had a bad ass reverse osmosis setup and the water was amazing! If I had that would probably be drinking more. Good luck.

man, dreading this trip tomorrow morning. a beloved friend is gonna drive me (and pick me up, as the 'responsible adult' as per instructions), will try not to snap at him on the long ride in to the city. I'll probs be ravenous with thirst before he even picks me up

I'd just smoke herb for those 8 hours but apparently I'm not supposed to do that either. been years since I had an operation, but I do remember that (among other things cuz that was a non-dental major surgery) the lack of hydration was dread

Through the summer, we each drink maybe 1.5lt of water a day & through the night, winter, maybe a litre through the day, the night's are colder, so not so much.

We drink a lot of other drinks through the days, whether wine, rum or a few beers with lunch & dinners

tap all the way. I don't pay anything for water unless it's at my neighbourhood spot that squeezes in fresh lime or out at a club where they pour it for me and of course I tip

don't buy bottled (try to minimize plastic use) and don't even boil it at home. same with when I lived in BZ

everywhere I've visited/brief-term lived except the DR and Guatemala was fine either straight up or with boiling

Belize and JA for long term living, zero issues from tap or even upstream river water not near the mines

one exception TCI for long term living. there the water was orange and smelled and tasted like burning hair. NO ONE drank from the tap and boiling not enough. if you drank it your throat burned

instead we'd get these free (and were reusable) 10 gallon jugs and fill 'em up for 50 cents USD at water stations. when I was new there remember it being such a cool place to make friends. also excellent for muscle strength/toning cuz my husband complained constantly about hauling it about. yeah, sometimes a PITA but I liked it

most expats usually just did bottled, didn't know or care what they spent. was just happy locals and local-side temp workers had affordable access in reusable jugs cuz tap water not even a choice. even washed my face and rinsed out my hair with jug water


I woulda thought Spain would have potable water? was there so many moons ago for a few weeks (had such a wicked time) during a Euro road-trip summer and maybe I drank bottles? was honestly too long ago to recall. your post surprised me though

20 cents per L ain't bad at all, not anywhere near cigarette prices which is my comparable for most things

I don't know much water I drink but I drink a lot... I start first thing in the morning.

It's 6pm here right now and I am working from my office in the master bedroom. I have a bottle of water in front of me, and two others waiting in reserve.

I do not drink anything other than water at this point. And Gatorade.

also was seriously curious where peeps are at esp in light of AI water-usage which I mentioned elsewhere. which in turn made me think about human agua consumption. was not trolling/hating in those posts, just two passing mentions in the context of us understanding the amount of 'invisible' resources we use with these tools. I think a lot of people still honestly aren't cognizant (pun so intended in light of the corp) of the resources consumed

I'm pro-AI, I have had fun exploring it and will use it to create/complete my bot. just let's all know the cost of it and use it as responsibly as we can

a while back when I told a local friend how much water AI 'drinks' her comment (paraphrasing) was 'so basically a bit more than you'. they all saw it with hurricane Beryl, me drinking more than some couples (some with kids) per day when we were all parring when everything was shut down during and in the aftermath for days

so that and I had to go without it for 8 hours. at least I could have my cigs

again, was super curious where others were at re personal (in/on their person as the cops would say) consumption. simple confluence of two events/topics

recall when I was a kid my parents worried I had diabetes cuz I drank so much (apparently diabetics are always thirsty). nope, just fucking love water

Alright, who you kidding, course I got something to say. First of all, while I'm sure there are some decent folk out there, for the most part Humans have ravaged, consumed and destroyed pretty much everything in their path, at whatever cost. And the waste level is un-believable, so much waste, with many things, including water. I mean, the golf courses are the freaking worst. They waste sooo much water on grass, I mean so much water. If it was just for trees, fine, but grass?! And for what, for a bunch of knuckle heads to hit a ball around a course and make shady deals. No clue what these people are after -- world domination, power, fame, fortune, moving to mars, no idea. Now, on the other hand, Humans have also created some cool shit, like this AI stuff and others have done some good things as well. Anyway ...

As far as water usage, and how much AI uses, I'd have to look into that, but I only use AI sparingly as well. Lived off grid for awhile, so learned to appreciate things like water. Especially when there were times where the only way to get water was to catch it when it rained, or melt/boil it when it snowed. But, that's a whole other story in itself. I really don't think this planet has enough water to sustain us for much longer, so yeah, there's that too.

And for the record, I probably drink close to a gallon a day, plus coffee, plus some fruity mix drinks.

my line above about my friend joking to me about AI water usage in comparison to me (after I told her about it) was just that, a joke. AI energy and water consumption levels have to be compared to cities and nations, not individual human-level

the fact that you don't know this kinda speaks to why it's important for those of us who care about the sustainability of our lives on this planet to mention it every now and then. hardly I harp on it constantly, this thread was, as I stated, simply a confluence of AI usage thoughts in a couple other threads relating to the pervasiveness of the tech in our lives-including my own, and how the fuck am I gonna go 8 hours without water?

let alone put chaps on agua and ride it like a pony?

couple starter links below, but multiple studies from multiple sources available all over if one cares to look, or knows the issue is real to look. your post would suggest the latter. no shade on that

tons of stuff without AI-bashing or 'death is nigh' nonsense. many focused on problem-solving, with the idea that the current unsustainability of this set of tools is something that could be mitigated significantly through a combo of human will and ingenuity (and perchance AI tools as well?)

note if/as you read that diff LLMs/systems consume some pretty significant diffs in levels of consumption, including the feedback loops between energy req's and water source use. still all fuckery level bad right now, but evidence that AI LLMs are not some monolithic thing

rather, would indicate that if enough peeps actually know and care way less wasteful ones could be created
