Who knows art?

I am looking for a Christmas present for the manchild, but I don't know what it is.

One of his professor's had it hanging in a classroom. When I had to reformat, I lost my icq history, so I don't have the link that he showed me anymore.

The subject was death. And there were just dead people stewn all over the place.

I think it is pretty famous, if I remember the conversation we had about it correctly.

Any clues as to what it might be?

Somehow it having to do with the Dutch is in my head.

Not much in the way of clues...

What time period is it from? What style? What media?

For example, here is a famous painting by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso depicting death, it is an abstract (cubist) style mural titled Guernica:

What else stands out about the piece? Was there a dominant color, was the location unique? Why were the people dead?

I am fairly knowledgeable about art - I took Humanities classes in Art History, and have visited many of the world's great museums, but you have not provided much to go on.

You could always try and contact the Professor too...

I found it, thanks to the Gods of Google.

It is called The Triumph of Death.

Thanks for trying to help, ADG. I know I was pretty sketchy on info. I just happened to think of him liking that when I was down to his last present, and couldn't remember much about it.

The only person that comes to mind even remotely close to what you described is Hieronymus Bosch. Hope that helps...

That is it.

Why on earth he likes it, I don't know, but a print is on the way.

Nothing says Merry Christmas like corpses and skeletons, I suppose.

Awesome art. I'm not familiar with the style but it looks pretty nice.

What's a good place to order prints like this?

I love the painting, "The Girl With The Pearl Earring". It is much more typical of Dutch master painters:

Oddly enough, I was reintroduced to Verneer's masterpiece recently after picking up a DVD movie of the same title, featuring Scarlett Johanssen as the girl with the pearl earring:

I've never used them before, so I can't vouch for their goodness yet. But I ordered it from http://www.allposters.com/

Framing can be expensive (although it doesn't have to be), and can ad significantly to a piece of art, be it an original or a print.

Check around locally - some discount frame stores will mount the picture for free with the purchase of a frame, and 'tis the season for sales.
