sometimes I wonder
This is kinda pointless post, but when I read a lot of other posts I think the same thing. I read the article I clipped below and it reminded me how lucky I am, and probably most of us are, to have jobs, have homes, and the abilities to pursue our futures.
I thought some of you might enjoy reading it, and think twice when you see the bum on the corner. Homeless Woman Killed Trying to Stay Dry By Nancy L. Othón Sunsentinel.com WEST BOCA -- As they usually did when it began to rain, Dianne and John ?Jay? Richmond headed Thursday night to a bank near the corner of U.S. 441 and Sandalfoot Boulevard where they could sit under the overhang and stay dry. Dianne Richmond had made it to the middle of the highway after running across three lanes and had stepped off the median when a car hit her, killing her instantly. Her husband, who has lost his longtime companion and best friend, relived the crash Friday and began to second-guess himself. ?I should have held her hand,? he said. ?.. . It?s over now.? Palm Beach County Sheriff?s investigators say Marc Rivera, 17, was driving north in his Ford Probe about 8:45 p.m. when Dianne Richmond, 49, stepped into the car?s path. ?I saw the car and I tried hollering at Dianne to back up, back up,? said Richmond, 48. ?I guess she didn?t hear me.? Both Dianne and Jay Richmond had been drinking, Richmond said. The crash remains under investigation. Several motorists immediately called 911 on their cell phones and firefighters arrived in minutes, Richmond said. ?They put a blanket on top of her ? damn, she?s gone, man,? Richmond said, his eyes watery and red. ?She was my best friend.? For the past three years, Dianne and Jay Richmond had lived on the streets west of Boca Raton. Jay Richmond had been fired from his job as a cabinetmaker in Hollywood and Dianne Richmond no longer received Social Security disability checks. ?I lost my job, she lost her checks and that put us both in the dog yard,? Jay Richmond said. Dianne Richmond occasionally cleaned houses for cash, while her husband solicited money at intersections west of Boca Raton. Both were familiar to area business owners. ?She was a sweetheart,? said Basil Passalaqua, owner of the Rock ?N Roast restaurant on U.S. 441. ?They never bother anyone.? On Friday afternoon, Passalaqua walked to the shady patch on Sandalfoot Boulevard that Richmond calls home to check on the grieving man. ?I?m trying to keep it together,? Richmond told Passalaqua. ?I got six bucks today.? Two days earlier, Dianne Richmond had gone to the Rock ?N Roast to buy a hot dog and ice cream for her husband, who turned 48 that day. ?She tried so hard to take care of him,? said Tina Fields, who works at Rock ?N Roast. ?She wanted to try for a better life.? Employees at the restaurant were pitching in Friday to buy dinner for Jay Richmond and buy flowers in Dianne Richmond?s memory. Jay Richmond said he plans to carve a cross to place near the site where his wife of four years was killed. He doesn?t have the money for a proper burial and plans to contact his wife?s relatives to see if they can pay for a burial. The couple met about 10 years ago and became romantically involved shortly after Jay Richmond was released from prison, he said. Richmond spent six years in prison on robbery charges. Richmond never really got his life back together after serving time in prison, he said, but Dianne was a constant bright spot in his life. ?She was the nicest person,? he said. ?She would do anything for you.? Together, the couple had stashed their possessions ? books, clothes and blankets ? inside backpacksstuffed in various shrubs in the Sandalfoot area. They would buy beer in the morning, then hit the streets in search of drivers willing to hand over a buck or two. Whenever they wanted to shower, they would walk to a lounge and use the hose. ?We talked about getting off the streets for a long time,? he said. ?But I would have to get lucky and find a job.? |

I only dream of two things
To grow a large manly man beard ala Grizzly Adams and to enjoy the freedom that being a hobo surely can provide. |

The movie was pretty good. The premise? Well, lets see. Aliens use crop formations as signs of a pending invasion, and you get to see the equivilant of the War of the Worlds from the point of view of one family in the rural midwest of the united states. It was well done, I thought, and did not seem contrived. Mel Gibson did a good job, and his supporting cast helped to provide depth to the movie.
As for your other question, yes, I am a practicing attorney. |

maybe if bums spent more time looking for jobs and less time getting wasted and running across intersections, shit like this wouldn't happen. I know the intersection that this lady died at well, i must have passed it thousands of times, there's a fucking crosswalk there, sometimes i wonder what the fuck is wrong with some people...
